Redemption by Jack Jordan
Redemption has been put forward for the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing 2025 prize and with good reason.
It starts in the past of a loving couple who live in London and their life seems to have been idyllic although the conversation about death and betrayal perhaps tolls for the future. The story switches to 20 years hence in San Diego where Tobias and Evelyn are in a mire of grief and loss over the tragic death of their beloved son Joshua. The couple have different ways of coping with the loss, Tobias by overwhelming his wife with his need and love and Evelyn plotting her revenge on the hit and run driver who killed her son and left him to die alone. She intends to kill Aaron Alexander (the driver) and Tobias doesn’t try to persuade her otherwise because she shuts him down and he is so scared he will lose the woman he loves. The moment Aaron is released on parole the story picks up speed towards the final retribution or will it be redemption and for whom?
Jack Jordan writes each protagonist in their own chapters which enables the reader to learn more about the motivations and backgrounds of each of them. The scenes of the unfolding chase against the backdrop of Death Valley with wildfires are brilliantly written and evocative and the tension builds continually and it becomes a page turner to find out what happens next!
He also writes of the emotional wreckages of each life and the couples reactions to loss are not really normal and Evelyn particularly is a little difficult to understand as she is a psychiatrist - should she know better? It seems that too little love and too much love can be equally toxic.
This is my genre and is a good read though I did find it a bit of stretch to believe that ordinary folks are capable of such actions and survive them.
Definitely recommended.
