The brand new John Rebus thriller from the iconic Number One bestseller Ian Rankin: one of the must-read books of the year.

‘Rebus in jail and better than ever … Surprising, gripping and witty. Rankin has taken the police procedural and transformed into an epic character study of a man and his city … Nobody does it better.’

Oundle Crime

This is the latest John Rebus story, which was published in 2024. Rebus is in Edinburgh Prison, six months into a life sentence for killing Big Ger Cafferty, the Edinburgh crime boss who’d been Rebus’s nemesis for most of his working life. As an ex-cop Rebus has his own prison cell but Darryl Christie, Cafferty’s biggest crime rival, resides in the same hall. The novel kicks off with a prisoner being found dead in his cell one morning, while his cell-mate lies bleeding and badly injured in the top bunk. As an interested observer on the wrong side of the wire, Rebus finds himself watching his ex-colleagues investigate. There’s action inside and outside of the prison and some familiar characters to get reacquainted with. It’s a complicated plot with lots of moving parts and I found it absorbing.
