On the Mongolian steppes a general in the People’s Liberation Army stakes his career, and his life, on a GPS-free missile guidance system that will change the balance of power on the battlefield.
In Bath a young Chinese woman has secured the affections of a young brainiac working on that very problem.
In Leamington Spa a deep cover operative has given himself away.
And in London Jonas Merrick watches all, assessing, planning. A moment, perhaps, for him to strike a blow to China’s espionage network in the UK.
One thing he does not see, however, is in Moscow. An order given: ‘bring me his head’.
Tautly plotted and frighteningly authentic The Best Revenge cements Jonas Merrick as one of the great figures of modern spy fiction.

Book 4 in Seymour’s Jonas Merrick series and another thoroughly entertaining story. This concerns Merrick’s efforts to bring down a network of Chinese spies in the UK, with a sub-plot involving the Russians. As always, Merrick is working mostly alone, staying under the radar to avoid the scrutiny of his bosses at MI5, who would certainly stop his plans in their tracks if they knew of them. Seymour writes in a rat-a-tat-tat style that brings its own tension to the proceedings and Merrick is a great character, unlikeable in many ways but completely single-minded when it comes to his work. It's a good cat-and-mouse spy story with lots in it that will make you smile. I've always found these books amusing to read and well-plotted, but this one ends with a bit of a question mark so I'm really hoping the series will continue.
