It is 1910 and Maia, tragically orphaned at 13, has been sent from England to start a new life with distant relatives in Manaus, hundreds of miles up the Amazon. She is accompanied by an eccentric and mysterious governess who has secret reasons of her own for making the journey. Both soon discover an exotic world bursting with new experiences in this highly colourful, joyous and award-winning adventure.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Throughout, I felt it was hiding something to then let go at the end because of the mystery and magic it had to offer. My favourite character was Finn because he kept his promises and did his best to make everyone happy. I would recommend this book to anybody who has a taste for adventure!
This book is so adventurous, exciting and magical! It expresses the true power of the Amazon! My favourite character is Maia because she is very brave, bold and powerful. I think the antagonists are Beatrice, Gwendolyn, Mrs Carter, Mr Carter, Mr Trapwood and Mr Low. I would definitely recommend it to someone who doesn't know what to read, or someone who is looking for adventure, enjoyment, thrill and a bit of fun! My favourite part of the book was when Finn, Clovis, Maia and Professor Glastonberry try to make the plan to escape to Westwood work, because that requires a huge amount of determination, brilliance and bravery. At least it all worked out in the end!

I would recommend this book as it is a lovely adventure book. It is filled with ups and downs and lots of surprising moments.
Loved Eva Ibbotson’s writing. My daughter has just received a copy of the new Emma Carroll sequel. I wonder if it will stand up to comparison. 🦥
I absolutely loved this book. I felt like I was there beside Maia. It was unputdownable. I just couldn't stop reading this book. This book has made Eva Ibbotson one of my favourite authors.
Amazing book
I love adventures
I really liked it I would recommend it to my sister who is 8 years old
I think Eva Ibbotson, the author, is a genius writer because this book is filled with tons of amazing nature descriptions, and a lot of suspensive adventure. This book is about an orphan named Maia, and her governess, Miss Minton. Mr Murray, Maia's governess, has found Maia some relatives called the Carter's, A family with two twins and their mum and dad. However, they are a less nicer than she expects. Later, Maia meets an actor and an Indian boy who needs to prevent himself from being brought to England and escape to the Xanti tribe.
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy adventure stories. It’s about a girl called Maia and she goes to the Amazon Rainforest to go and live with her Aunt, Uncle and two cousins called Beatrice and Gwendolyn. Maia thinks they will be really nice because in the letter they sent her they sounded so nice but they are actually horrible. Also her Aunt and Uncle (Mr and Mrs Carter) are only bringing her here because when her parents died they left her a lot of money in a bank. Mr Carter is in Debt (over £40,000) and now he is in a lot of trouble! I thoroughly enjoyed this book with all the twists and turns. And there is a character called Finn and he is very nice but he is hiding.......
It was fun and had lots of adventures in it. My favourite character was Maya, she was interested in reading just like me. I think my friends would love this book.
Definitely recommend this book. It is creative and I give it 5 stars.
This book is marvellous, mind-blowing and magnificent book! It would be hard to only choose one favourite character. My favourite are Miss Minton, Maia, Clovis and Finn. Miss Minton is a governess Maia is a orphan, Finn is a orphan that lives in the Rainforest and Clovis, well, you'll have to read the book to find out...
I would definitely recommend this book to children aged 9-10+. This book is a must-read, you will be amazed by the wonder.
Wow! This book was incredible! I couldn't put it down...
My favourite character was Maia Because she is just an ordinary girl with a breath-taking life!
At first, the book didn't really grasp me in but then once I started reading a bit more and a lot at the same time, it really hooked me in!
If you liked 'letters from the lighthouse', I am sure you will love this book!
I really liked this book, however it did not really grasp me in straight away like other books do.
I liked Maia the best.
I would definitely recommend this book!
