Determined to try to free the poor creature, they repeatedly dive down into the freezing sea to cut the netting, but eventually, exhausted and with a storm rolling in, they have to admit defeat. As they head for home to seek help, their boat capsizes in the storm and they’re left clinging to it, dangerously adrift. On a moonlit walk Tulsi and her best friend Satchen spot something unusual in the sea near their home in Scotland. Deciding to investigate they row out to a nearby island and begin to explore soon finding a whale stranded a little way off shore. Despite the danger Tulsi and Satchen decide that they have to help the whale, working together to try and free it before a storm hits.
This is clearly a book about two children that care deeply for the environment and the animals that inhabit it, but it’s also a book about a deep friendship, trust and some great teamwork. Filled with plenty of ups and downs, danger, adventure, bravery and kindness Calling the Whales is a lovely read.
Published by Barrington Stoke this is a super accessible book for struggling and reluctant readers with shorter paragraphs and chapters to help keep them engrossed. It’s also the perfect age appropriate quick read for those that enjoy shorter stories.

A great addition to the Barrington Stoke cannon from Jasbinder Balin. The accessible story packs real adventure and peril info it’s slim volume. It also highlights the need to look after whales and care for our environment without over preaching.

Calling the Whales is a really special book which will make readers think a lot about the oceans and all the unique and beautiful sea-life that live there, and what we can do to protect it and stop any more damage from taking place. I love the way Jasbinder Bilan describes the friendship between Tulsi and Satchen and how they work together to save a humpback whale, who they name Angus. The whale has been trapped by netting tangled around his fin and is at risk of dying. The way she describes the eye of the whale and its song was mesmerising. When Tulsi and Satchen then get caught in a storm and their boat capsizes, Angus comes and rescues them, pushing their boat along until the lifeboat finds them. I really loved the two friends and their passion for protecting the environment and saving the whales. Their interview with the radio presenter had lots of important messages in it and ways we can all help. This a book filled with compassion and love. It would be a fantastic book to use when teaching science or geography. As it’s a Barrington Stoke book it’s really accessible too and short so can be read in about 40mins.

Tulsi and Satchen have just finished primary school, they are climbing the Craig above their home in East Shawle. It's night-time, the whale-jawbone replica on the top of the hill casts a spooky shadow.
Tonight it feels different, the sea is rippling, and Tulsi wants to go to the beach. But Satchen goes home, his Mum worries about him more because he has a baby sister who is in hospital not well. Tulsi goes to the beach alone - she's sure something is wrong.
The next morning, the two children row out to the island. They've done this lots of times. But what was that noise.
The children investigate...but is it the seabirds making that noise? What can they do?

Tulsi and Satchen are incredible they fight for, raise money for and look after their environment. Perhaps this is a story to encourage all children to do the same.
