Many thanks to @ReadingAgency and @PenguinRandom for providing copies of Victory City for Macclesfield Library Reading Group to read and review. Here are the thoughts of our members –

“I liked the strong narrative and the use of fable mixed in with history. I hadn’t realised that the author was describing a real place and depicting, albeit in a fantastical way, the story of a real empire. He made history magic!”

“I have never read anything by Salman Rushdie before but I enjoyed his style of writing. I felt that he used language in a way that was very accessible and easy to follow and I liked his playful use of imagery. Having recently read for book group some other equally weighty tomes tackling big issues, Rushdie’s novel was much more engaging than I expected.”

“Magical realism is really not my thing so I wasn’t taken with this book at all. I couldn’t keep track of all the characters so I struggled to engage or care about the story.”

“I liked how the author represented the caste system and I liked the liberal, tolerant nature of the city and of Pampa Kampana.”

“The themes of tolerance and of the consequences of blindly following power were all valid and needed to be said, but it could have been done in a more concise, less meandering way.”
