Her name is Jane Smith. But to friends and foes, she’s Jane Effing Smith.
Why? Because she’s the best criminal defence attorney in the Hamptons – the elite world of New York’s rich and infamous. Because she’s as good an investigator as she is a lawyer. Because she’s tough. She’s strong.
As Jane is preparing to defend a high-profile client accused of a triple homicide, she’s also hired to revive a cold case – a cluster of unsolved murders.
Then another bombshell lands. A devastating medical diagnosis. Terminal. She’s got a year to live.
But for now, she has a trial to win. Unless one of her many enemies kills her first.

Jane Smith is a defence attorney, living and working on Long Island and currently defending a high-profile, very rich and very obnoxious client accused of a triple murder. At the same time, she and her associate, Jimmy (an ex-policeman), are looking into another historic triple murder in the area. It soon becomes clear that someone doesn’t want Jane to look into this, as witnesses either disappear or are shot. Jane has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer, hence the title, but refuses to consider treatment until she's won her case. The book is pretty evenly divided between fiery court scenes and following the other investigation. Jane is determined, feisty and pretty foulmouthed, but still a character I warmed to. I think this is the first James Patterson book I've ever read and although it’s not particularly well-written it’s very readable, and the descriptions of Long Island are good and vivid.
