A big-hearted story about figuring out what you want from life – and then finding the courage to go after it. Perfect for fans of Sally Page, Ruth Hogan and Clare Pooley.

Clover Brooks has forgotten how to live.

It might be because she spends her time caring for people in their final days, working as a death doula in New York City.

Or it might be because she has a regret of her own – one she can’t bring herself to let go of.

But then she meets Claudia: a feisty old woman who has one last wish . . .

As Clover begins a new adventure, will she remember how to live her own big, beautiful life?

The Macclesfield Library Reading Group received free copies of this book in exchange for their reviews.

The group all really enjoyed this book (which is unusual for our group!) they especially like reading about Clover's job as a death doula and we had lots of interesting discussion surrounding death and grief. Here are our reviews:

Laura
'I really liked the characters and the little hints of life within Clover's story of death. Each character was moving, likable and grounded. Exploring death as something other than grief and more as a celebration of life was really eye-opening without being too sombre and depressing. My favourite characters were Claudia, Grandpa and Leo- I felt they were strong characters who provided valuable insight into Clover's life. I loved their stories and the surprises in each of their stories. I expected this book to make me feel sad but it was surprisingly heart-warming. I would recommend this to family and friends who want an easy heartfelt book'
Heather:
'A light-hearted book with an intriguing storyline! I found it really interesting and was surprised by the light-heartedness given it's subject matter. I think Sylvia was my favourite character as she wears her heart on her sleeve. This book made me feel thoughtful and grateful that there are people who choose to do this for a job. I did enjoy the book but i did feel it was a bit far-fetched and a bit twee!'
Lin
'I enjoyed the subject matter as the subject of a death doula is new to me. I really enjoyed hearing about Clover's life and her relationship with former clients and i loved all the references to films. My favourite character was the younger Hugo and Claudia- these felt like more fleshed out characters. This was an enjoyable book and i would call it a 'good' but i think it could have been a 'great' book with less focus on the love-life of Clover and more on the doula aspect!
Lizzy
'I like the way the story moved and i knew from the first paragraph that i was going to enjoy it. The use of descriptive language and elements of humour made it an easy read out of what could have been quite a formidable subject. I enjoyed the humour and compassion running through the book. My favourite character in the book was Clover's Grandpa. The book made me feel happy despite the subject matter.'
Helen
'I have never heard of a death doula so found this aspect interesting and I especially enjoyed reading about the people Clover met and helped as a death doula. This was the aspect of the book I enjoyed the most. I liked the idea of her 3 notebooks and her keeping safe the people's last words. Clover's new neighbour Sylvie was my favourite character as she was the opposite to Clover and tried hard to help her. It is not usually my type of book but i enjoyed the change of pace. I would recommend this book to female friends and family.'
Indra
'Quite different from anything I've read before - an interesting premise and well written. The themes of death and grief are almost characters in the book they are so well written. I really enjoyed the character of Clover- i enjoyed her sensitivity and her insight. I expected the book to be sad but actually it was heart-warming'
Rose
'An easy, light-hearted read that is perfect for a evening! Although the predominant subject is grief and death the book is surprisingly enjoyable and full of humour!'
