From the bestselling author of When the Sky Falls comes the heart-rending story of evacuee Peggy, separated from her beloved dog Beau in the Second World War.

Peggy and her dog Beau are inseparable: the only thing that can ever come between them is war. Peggy is evacuated to the safety of the coast, but Beau is left behind in the city. He becomes the most extraordinary and unlikely of war heroes, searching the streets after the bombs fall for survivors. Then disaster strikes when Peggy’s parents are killed, leaving her and Beau alone, hundreds of miles apart. But Beau has a plan to reunite them…

This book was told from the perspective of the animals in the story. It portrays life in WWII in a unique way. There are sad concepts in this book but they are dealt with sensitively

I would recommend this book to any reader who likes war based books. This story is about a stray dog called Beau who is taken in by a kind girl called Peggy. They soon build a strong relationship. But suddenly, war breaks out and she is evacuated. Beau is sad but does his part in war. Though, suddenly something happens and he must go on a long journey to find his beloved Peggy. Who will help him? What will happen along the way?

Another powerful WWII novel with animals again at the centre of the story.

One of the best books I have ever read. Funny, scary, and overall brilliant. My favorite character would have to be Mabel the cat for her attitude and leadership. Would say though maybe not for younger kids.

I LOVED this book. I couldn't put it down. Phil Earle adds depth to his characters and really draws you in. There were tears at the end. The relationship between the main characters really got you involved in the story and willing them on.

This reminded me of learning about world war 2 in class! It is a good way to teach children about our history.

Lovely story - especially if you are in a WW2 phase as I am. Gentle, but definitely a romp!

My favourite character was the dog because he showed courage and bravery in the most difficult times.
I would recommend this book to someone how like books based in World War 2.

Until the Road Ends is a must-read set in WWII but told from a different perspective - an emotional rollercoaster starring Beau, a dog rescued from the streets, whose devotion and heart take him on a gruelling journey.

This book was wonderfully written. The death of bomber almost made me cry and the ending was happy but heartbreaking.

Told from the perspective of a stray dog who is adppted into a family in WW2. Beautiful story of loyalty and love. Tragedy strikes and the dog is determined to help 'his girl'. Beautiful and funny. Will be loved by Upper KS2.

I really enjoy historical fiction and love Phil Earls writing, although this was not my favourite of his recent books. This is probably because I’m not an animal lover. Nevertheless it is a beautifully written story with strong characters that children can really connect with. Being told from the animal’s perspective gives it a different feel and will certainly make it appealing to the target audience. Overall an engaging and enjoyable story.

A bitter-sweet heart rendering adventure story set during WWII. Beau the dog is rescued from near death by Peggy Alford who takes him into the family home. When war starts and Peggy is evacuated, Beau is heart broken but he soon finds a new purpose; sniffing out survivors following the air raids with Mr Alford.
Then the unthinkable happens and Beau sets off on a journey to the coast along with Mabel the cat and Bomber the pigeon to be reunited with Peggy and her brother Wilf. Themes of friendship, resilience, courage and love. You'll root for Beau all the way. Masterfully written with humour, authenticity and heart. A new class reader for SLS.

A fantastic book. A great insight into WW2 but from an alternate perspective. I really liked the perspective of the different animals. Mabel the cat really behaved how you would expect, sassy and disinterested but yearning to be involved, just not wanting to show it! And Bomber the pigeon's yearning to play an important role as a soldier, without realising that by helping Beau and Mabel find the children he was helping in so many more ways!
I would definitely recommend this book to others to read. A perfect book for children interested in animals, the war, themes of friendship and resilience, adventure. A great book to provoke emotion in those who read it, with a bit of humour littered throughout!!
