WINNER OF THE WATERSTONES CHILDREN’S BOOK PRIZE (YOUNGER)

A magical adventure rooted in Muslim culture and tradition, Nura and the Immortal Palace follows a young girl’s journey from modern-day Pakistan into the world of the jinn.

Nura has worked all her life in the mica mines, earning just enough to keep her family afloat – and enjoy the odd delicious gulab jamun from the market. Some day she’s going to find the Demon’s Tongue, a legendary treasure buried deep in the mines, and her family will never have to worry about money again.

But when a terrible accident buries her best friend below ground, Nura goes in search of him and passes over into the magical and terrible world of the jinn. Across a pink sea and under a purple sky, she finds her way to a palace, where great riches and a whole new life are on offer.

But it’s not long before Nura discovers this world to be as unfair as the real one, and that trickster jinns will always live up to their reputation…

This was an interesting book and different from what I would normally read. The story plot was good, set in an interesting culture.

My favourite character was Nura because she was very brave and courageous and she was also very smart. I don't think that Faisal should have as nervous as he was I also think that there was too much detail.

I really enjoyed this book. You could really feel the emotions of the characters. My favourite character was probably Nura as she was very determined, fearless and strong. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 9. This book also totally deserves all the awards it’s been given e.g the Waterstones children book prize 2023.

My favourite character is Nura because she is determined to save her friends from the jinn. I think this book is the genre fantasy adventure. It interested me because it was fun and had a lot of sudden plot twists. I would recommend this book to ages 7+ because it has mild violence in it.

Nura is a feisty character who comes to recognise the connection between greed and exploitation..

I enjoyed this book because it was full of excitement and adventure. My favourite character is Faisal because he is not afraid to share his opinion on things that are not right.

Nura and her friends work in bad conditions in a mica mine until one day the mine collapses. When trying to find her friend, Faisal, Nura finds herself in the immortal palace, inhabited by all sorts of weird and wonderful Jinn. At first everything seems wonderful and she believes that she has found Faisal and is collecting money to take home for her family, but all is not as it seems. It is set just before Eid al-Adha and she wants to get back to her family and take them nice things. There are references to food and to Islamic prayers. Themes of doing the right thing and friendship. I would recommend this to Years 4 - 6.

Good book about trickery, friendship, family, fantasy and everything in between.

This is an adventurous and exciting book, packed with twists and turns, meaningful messages and plenty of trickery. Definitely worth a read!

A wonderful and fantastical story that does a fantastic job of teaching children about the value of money and education as well as the difficult circumstances surrounding child labour. The protagonist is a character many children can sympathise with; someone who doesn't know the value of what she has until is gone. This is set on a backdrop of a beautifully layered description which any reader would enjoy.

this is the best book I have ever read! in my opinun the best person in the book is the crasfsman because he is a Jinn,Jinn are born mean trisksters but the crafsman was nice and caring.this book is 10 out of 10!

It was descriptive and made you feel like you were in the place that the writer was describing.

26 Aug 2022

Reall strong characters, espacilly Nura, who has a journey in her characther as well as a literal one, very descriptive intersting insight into another mythology, but also provokes intersting and deep questions on child labour, admit have lost interest at the end of the story, struggled with the sudden flurry of ideas....

I really liked how Nura went into a magical world to rescue her best friend.

18 Aug 2022

I liked it because people have these blue people called jinns that are the spitting image of themselves.but they have different names.they change the first Letter of their name like
Faisels .jinn is raisel
The jinns capture children to be their slaves. I would recommend it

That was a very colourful and fantasical story and my first book involving Jinns! It doesn't say where it is set but it feels somewhere near India and Islam is mentioned frequently so was was interesting to read more about this faith. Nura works in the mica mines but during a mine collapse she and some friends end up in the Jinn realm where most things are not what they seem. Aimed at yr4+
