Do you like epic quests of amazing counting?
Do you dislike global pandemics, being stuck at home, and the number 7?
Then I have a story for you. It’s about how I counted to a million during lockdown – with help from Mum and Dad, friends and neighbours, and Grandad. And some birds. And a bucket of marbles. And an awesome TV reporter.
Sometimes, just keeping on going makes you a hero.
Eight-year-old Max is counting to a million. Normally, school or having anything interesting to do would get in the way, but school is shut and everyone has to stay home because the UK is in its first lockdown. Max’s dad works at the hospital and counting helps Max with missing him, but as the pandemic progresses and Max’s grandad journeys through his own battle with the virus, what starts as a distraction turns into record-breaking effort that brings Max’s community together.
Suitable for readers aged 7 up, this funny, poignant, uplifting story reflects the experiences shared by so many during the Covid pandemic and celebrates how ordinary people accomplish epic things.

An amazing story to never give up and soon you will reach your goal
This is such a good book about lockdown and it really shows what the pandemic was like before and the way it shows life back then and supports the fact it really is heartwarming!
I loved this book it is very sad then happy in the last 20 pages I really enjoyed. People around 8-11 I think would really like this book!!

Max counts to a Million is a brilliant description of the magic woven through the pages of this book that made me realise that counting will make a big difference sometimes.
a very heartwarming story, keeps you reading
The book was very interesting. As the books title was Max counting to a million, it was actually Max talking about the coronavirus and the pandemic but at the end on the chapters it was counting to a million and he was very active when he was counting. He thought about what will help him achieve his goal.
This book was about coronavirus starting and his dad went away to work and that’s when he started counting. Later in the book something sad happened.
This book was funny and the main character made me laugh-he was a boy who was very determined!
I loved that this book recorded the experience of lockdown. Made me laugh and remember the strange times of Covid lockdowns.
Best book ever
Max counts to a million in lockdown to keep himself entertained but then actually counts to a million and nine because he is nine!
There’s someone called Max and he counts to a million and nine!
My favourite character was Bea Hixby
A funny yet thoughtful story of a boy living through lockdown during the Covid 19 pandemic. Max’s worries are dealt with with understanding and he is an endearing character who has hilarious insights on life. Great for children to read and reflect on their experiences. Would recommend to children 8+
