Written with great empathy and Rauf’s trademark humour, The Great (Food) Bank Heist is a moving story that gives a child’s-eye view of the increasing problem of food poverty. On Thursdays, Nelson, Ashley and Mum head out to the bank. But not just any old bank – the food bank. With its shining tins and packets of food stacked from floor to ceiling, Nelson thinks it’s the best kind of bank there is. But there’s a thief in town, and the shelves of the food bank are getting emptier each day, leaving people hungrier than ever. For the sake of his family and everyone else’s, Nelson needs to make them stop. But can he and his friends really be the ones to catch the bank robber? TweetReviews
Brilliant I want to read the golden stamp now
I loved the book. My favorite part was when the four kids catched the thief .I think many people should read this book because the book was so exciting and fun to read.
I like books like this that make me laugh
This book will resonate with many children living in deprived areas of the UK. The story focuses upon a single parent family who are struggling to get enough food and who often go hungry.
The delightful characters investigate an issue with the supply of goods to the local foodbank which ends in an exciting denouement in the local supermarket.
I'd recommend this book to somebody else because it makes you think about what it would be like to not have enough food or money to live and how important it is to help people in need. It was cool that the kids were so determined to stop the thieves that they escaped from home to go to the supermarket to find the thieves. They found them and stood in front of their car until they got out and gave the food back. My favourite character was nelson.
It was absolutely amazing, the end bit was funny but it's also really sad that some people don't have enough food.
I loved this book, especially the part when the group of friends are on the mission to save the food bank. I would highly recommend it.
I found this book very very enjoyable as it describes the characters in an emotional way as they are a poor family and need to go to the food bank. The ending is funny and happy because when they do a food fight with the people who are stealing the food they win. This is why I rated the book 5/5
I learnt that you should be grateful with what you have.
A great read - accessible and fun with a powerful message. The children in the story are friendly and likeable. Thought provoking, empathy building and showing the resilience of kids, the book has depth for kids and the people who teach and raise them.
Nice read for upper KS1/ younger KS2 that raises key themes of poverty and hunger in the UK at a local level. Nelson and his friends help to solve the mystery of who has been stealing from the food banks before it is too late and even get a visit from their favourite footballer to celebrate their success!
Since their dad left them to be with another family Nelson and his little sister Ashley have come to look forward to voucher Thursdays when they visit the local food bank and swap their voucher for much needed food. However the well stocked food bank shelves are rapidly depleting, someone is steeling the donated food leaving those most in need to go hungry.
The issue of food poverty is a difficult one that urgently needs to be addressed, yet so many are still completely unaware of many peoples lack, even those we may see every day. The author deals with the subject with humour and humility exploring the children’s hunger and embarrassment in an extremely sensitive and easy to understand way. The story is at times funny, which highlights the serious issue without making the reader feel completely negative, rather they may feel as I did, empowered and inspired to do do something.
The characters are wonderful and feel very real as they all work together to find the thief and ensure that there’s enough food for everyone. The great illustrations throughout make the book more accessible and give the text added life, published by Barrington Stoke this is a brilliantly accessible story not only for dyslexics, reluctant readers but for everyone. This is definitely a book to recommend to raise awareness and understanding of this heart breaking and serious issue.
I think the great food bank heist was an amazing book that I would recommend to everyone!!!!!
I loved the book it was funny weird and it was nice to read
Just amazing . Makes you feel sad and then happy when the food bank gets good back .
I like this author and have read most of her books but I think this one was for younger readers.
I read this one in one day. It’s quite a short and easy read.
The story is about Chris, Harriet and Nelson and how they save the food bank from being robbed.
I think this book is definitely worth reading. I like how this author makes you think.
Written for such a great cause & written well, though shorter & more basic than the Boy at the Back of the Class. As a teacher reading it out to my class though, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable about making it clear why children went to Breakfast Club - I’d be concerned for their privacy.
It was packed with adventure and mystery, with a hint of comedy!
It made me very sad but enjoyable
I am a big fan of Onjali Q Rauf and have read all her books. This one did not disappoint. Fast moving action, young characters taking matters into their own hands and an exciting ending. This book has a serious message and raises issues of poverty and hunger in a child friendly way.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It takes a serious social issue and mixes it up with a mystery. It has a powerful message of children living in food poverty, empathy and justice. I look forward to reading more from Onjali Q. Rauf.
Third book of the day by the same author and another great read.
I liked it because it had a boy called Nelson who came from a very poor family. They went to the food bank every Thursday . Then one day they didn't have enough so Nelson and his friends went to Gladstores on saturday and they saw a man and a women swap a nearly empty trolley for the food bank donation trolley.
I liked Krish because I like football too and I would reccomend this to someone else
I really enjoyed reading this book, food banks are very important so it was great to read about it.
This was a good book.. Sometimes it was really sad but then also happy at times. I learned lots about food banks and I enjoyed the story.
The book was amazing and adventures . My favourite person was Ashley because she was the youngest kid. It was very interesting on how they caught the thieves who were stealing food that were going to go to the food Bank. My favourite part of the story was wen the guards thought the kids stole food form the shop but in the end they found out what happened and the kids had a lot to explain to the cops and their parents!
Nelson goes to breakfast club and his family use a food bank. But people have been stealing the food from the food bank. Can Nelson and friends catch the thieves. My favourite character is Nelson because he is brave. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure stories.
A good book that's about true life and why you should never steal from a food bank trolley.
