Setsuko and the Song of the Sea

The only part I didn’t like was when they were swimming in plastic but I did like when they weren’t and I love how the whale is kind

Lovely book about friendship between Setsuko and the Whale. Learnt a lot about how important it is to keep our ocean clean. Beautiful illustrations.

I loved it because it was full of songs and it passed on a good message about the sea and pollution.

This book is just beautiful! We were very lucky that two of our classes had an online visit from Fiona Barker so they had it read to them by the author herself.
Setsuko is a girl who loves the sea, she dives and swims every day. Her friends have stopped doing this. One day she meets a whale - a humpback - who despite being very large thinks he is small because the ocean is so large. He stays in the bay playing with Setsuko for a week. Then she realises he is looking out to the open ocean, she tells him to go and find some friends. But before he goes he sings her a song. This song helps her see what she needs to do and she sings to the people at home. They realise that they need to start cleaning up the beach and the ocean.
Fiona explained that Howard Gray, who is the illustrator of this book, took her words and created another story wrapped around them. His pictures at the beginning of the book show an ocean that is full of rubbish and as the book progresses the ocean becomes clearer until at teh end Setsuko and her friends are swimming in a clean ocean.
We all need to think about the dangers of our wasteful society. Do we really need that bag? That wet wipe? Could we use something better? Our oceans need us to try.

Is a beautiful story of a friendship between a girl and a whale.

I thought the book was great because it had fish in it and also I liked it because people helped to tidy up the garbage that was on the beach.

It was a good book even though it's full of rubbish (!).
You should read the book.
It made me think about the noise that whales make and also sea dragons and people put too much rubbish in the sea. It made me sad that it hurt the animals in the sea.

Another environmental story with beautiful illustrations. Illustrations that reflect the world as it is with plastic clearly visible in the ocean which was a good talking point as we shared the story.
I loved the Japanese translation of the story that runs along side each page.

I like the activities, where I have to find the plastic waste on the street. I tool the challenge of putting the plasic in the jar. Did litter survey on the street.

It was good because the whale found some friends and they picked up the rubbish at the end and Setsuko made a friend.
I liked Setsuko the best.
I would recommend this to someone else.

Fiction book. I liked this book a little bit because it was slow and steady and calm. I liked the pictures and the pictures of the sea. It has Japanese writing in it. I would definitely recommend it. I learnt that people can help save the beach by collecting up the plastic in the ocean and it teaches you to be kind to others.

A very interesting book that I enjoyed reading about how important it is to keep the sea clean.

I like that all of the people cleared up the sea in the end together. I like the writing down the side even though I don't know what it means.
