A dramatic and moving story set in the same world as the international bestseller The Island from the celebrated novelist Victoria Hislop.
The absorbing story of the Cretan village of Plaka and the tiny, deserted island of Spinalonga – Greece’s former leper colony – is told to us by Maria Petrakis, one of the children in the original version of The Island. She tells us of the ancient and misunderstood disease of leprosy, exploring the themes of stigma, shame and the treatment of those who are different, which are as relevant for children as adults. Gill Smith’s rich, full-colour illustrations will transport the reader to the timeless and beautiful Greek landscape and Mediterranean seascape.

I didn't like this book because I didn't like the thought of people having leprosy. I thought that the story was a bit sad and a bit happy. My favourite character was the cat.

I loved this book because it was very interesting! It's about Greece which is the home country of my parents. My grand parents also live there and I saw myself in the story of Maria who is the protagonist of the book.

A beautiful book telling the story of Spinalonga through the eyes of a child. Telling the story of Greece leprosy colony, and how it affected a family, and the finding of a cure. Beautiful

I liked Maria the best because of the fact that Maria helped all the people with Leprosy and never had stigma. I found out that l couldn't put the book down it was so entertaining

I really enjoyed reading this book because even though it is fictional it has a strong, deep message that you really take to heart. I love how it is based on events that really happened, the vibrant Greek landscape entrances readers and the characters personality/morals really make feel more drawn to them.

You can learn about history in this book leprocy was a real disease and it killed people until they found a cure. The book was emotional because the mother died of leprocy before they found a cure. A fact was that when people caught leprocy they were sent to an island called spinalonga. Spinalonga is still there but know one goes there anymore. I would recommend this book to people. i really liked it but it’s sad and it made me cry.

It was a very good book

A beautiful poignant story, reminiscent of Michael Morpurgo, about love, loss and memories. It is also about fear of the other and how we can overcome it. A worthwhile read for children of 8-10.

Read for spoilers!!!!
I really enjoy historical fiction and this is my favourite!!
I am a super fast reader and first read this in half an hour.
Set in Crete, Greece, Maria is a normal girl with a really mean sister called Anna. A sad part is when her friend and mother get leprosy and have to get taken to Spinalonga. A island were lepers are isolated from the world.
Another sad bit is when Maria herself gets leprosy.
But there are plenty of happy bits like when Maria talks about how much she doesn't like snail stew.
My favourite bit was when she got engaged to be married at the end
I really recommend this as it's educational and fun at the same time.

My favourite character was Maria. She took a great risk to test the cure for leprosy with docter Kryritsis. This book was a little sad because some lovely people died. But, above all, there is a happy ending.

The most interesting incident in this book is when Maria catches leprosy and has to go to Spinalonga because she can’t stay in Plaka.

This was a great book with lovely story telling and explained more about what type of disease leprosy is and how people lived and were treated at that time .
The main character Maria is a strong , caring , brave and supportive young lady who always puts other people first even if she is sad or hurt .
It is a story that makes me feel lucky and hopeful as it shows us how love , hope , courage and friendship can overcome very hard and difficult situations.
