Eleven-year-old Danny Chung loves drawing more than anything – certainly more than maths, which, according to his dad and everyone else, is what he is ‘supposed’ to be good at. He also loves having his own room where he can draw in peace, so his life is turned upside down when a surprise that he’s been promised turns out to be his little, wrinkly, ex-maths-champion grandmother from China. What’s worse, Nai Nai has to share his room, AND she takes the top bunk!
Nai Nai can’t speak a word of English, which doesn’t make things easy for Danny when he is charged with looking after her during his school holidays. Babysitting Nai Nai is NOT what he wants to be doing!
Before long though it becomes clear to Danny that there is more to Nai Nai than meets the eye, and that they have more in common that he thought possible …

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read because it was lot of fun and very humorous. My favourite character was the Grandma, Nai Nai, because she is funny and she is good a bingo and maths! I would really recommend this thrilling book.
Good
I read this book in my school last year, i had to beg my mum to buy me my own copy. this book is not fun to read, i dont get bored while travelling because am aways hooked with this or football one
I loved the idea of this story and the Bingo and maths in it are really good fun, some lovely quotes about feeling different but also about just being who you are
It was nice...
Really funny, I loved it! Yeah nice. I would really recommend it.
Yes , would highly recommend this book as it is very funny
A very accessible and heart warming story about family and belonging. It’s not ground breaking but is a very welcome addition to the genre.
This made an interesting change to read a contemporary story with a Chinese main character. Danny goes against all Chinese stereotypes types - he is not very good at Maths. His parents run a take away and are often very busy so he is left to his own devices until his Nai Nai comes to England to live with them. A story about family and cultural values . Aimed at 8+
This is a fictional story about a Chinese boy called Danny Chung who loves drawing and lives above a takeaway run by his parents. One day his mother’s ‘friends’ come to give them their daughter’s previous bunk bed and it gets assembled in Danny’s room. But he soon finds out that they got the bunk bed because his nai nai (grandmother) from China who Danny has never met is coming to sleep in the top bunk!…
This is an awesome book and I would recommend it.
It was boring at first but then it got more interesting at the end. My thoughts are that this book has a meaning and it teaches you something not like other books. The person I like the best is the main character’s grandmother which is called Doij Chan. Yes I would
Funny
This book was very funny! I thought that Nai Nai, who was Danny's (The main character) Gran was so funny but very kind too! Danny is Chinese and sometimes he gets bullied but his best friend always sticks by him. (Well, most of the time.) He also loves art, and so there are funny little doodles at the side of each page. I would definetly recommend it to anyone who likes funny but also meaningful books!
This book is about a boy who is Chinese and goes to school and has a friend who likes history and he does not like maths his grandma came over to live because she was very lonely and they have to share a bunk bed together his grandma helped him his math presentation.
I love this book greatly. It contains many things such as not doing maths and drawing. I really would prefer to recommend this book to friends.
We listen to this story as a family and I really enjoyed it.
I like Danny in it he is determined to do lots
I got this book from blue peter and it is just wonderful. Would recommend to people who like heat felt stories.
I loved this book and would definitely recommend it. It is funny, with some highly amusing similes -- and also has a serious message, Both Danny and his Grandma are great characters. This would be good for the year group I work with. Firstly, because we have children of Chinese descent. Secondly, the book shows that being with the 'cool' kids isn't always as good as it might seem from the outside. Equally as importantly, they'd love it!! :-)
I really enjoyed the developing relationship between Danny and his grandma, and the way she managed to throw herself into life in a strange country where she didn't know the language and people often were not supportive or friendly. I also liked the way Danny's relationships with his friend and the bullies were treated - all the shifts in feelings & allegiances came across.
As a (very non-artistic) maths enthusiast, I loved seeing how these two different ways of looking at the world were brought together, and how this strengthened the bond between Danny and his grandma.
I think this is a gem of a book. A lovely story about intergenerational relationships, family (especially expectations in families), friendship and being who you are. Themes of cultural belonging, racist stereotypes and class differences are included in a meaningful and thought-provoking way, without overwhelming the plot or pace of the story. Fantastic characters and just a really fun and funny read.
I really loved this book. It’s an easy to read, funny story about Danny . Danny, a boy of Chinese origin, is having to deal with some unsavoury characters at school and with family expectations to be good at maths (Danny loves art).
The book has lots of funny situations that Danny encounters but also gets across its central theme of challenging stereotypes. It’s also great to have a children’s book with the main character and family being from an East Asian background. I especially loved Nai Nai.
Highly recommend for years 3+
A great story of family and friendship and following your true path. It also addresses prejudice and harmful stereotypes and celebrates individuality and doing things your own way.
A heartwarming story about family and friendship. Humorously written.
