I thought this was a fine book and, as the story progressed, the plot did grip me more and more.

The final third of the book was a thrilling romp that made me forgive the lack of world building and I loved the various unexpected reveals.

But, I did find the book a slow start and wasn't moved by the plight of the women of Lilles, as I was supposed to be. The shaping of the world was heavy-handed and not as sophisticated as I would have liked. I didn't feel that Sophia's relationships with Erin or her parents, or her wider community was well-fleshed out enough to heighten the stakes of the book.

When Sophia was suddenly alone and we were experiencing the story through her inner voice only, I was instantly more engaged. That quickly dissipated though as Sophia was joined by another character. This leads me to my biggest barrier to enjoying the book, which was the dialogue. I kept thinking of the phrase "show don't tell" and especially don't tell in such a cringeworthy way.

I would recommend this book, but I would suggest readers lower their expectations for a feminist, queer, YA epic. At its core, it didn't read like a YA novel, its comments on gender roles were basic, its romantic plot unearned and its adherence to the Cinderella story haphazard.

This was a fiction book. My favourite character was Sophia. I’m not sure I really related to this book, but it was still a good read.

I loved this book because it shows that not everyone will be the same, not everyone will be brought up to like the same people. In this instance,a king rules over a town of people, women in this case, who have to choose a man.But sometimes a girl does not wish for a man,but another girl. The only problem being that if the king discovers she is not one of the brainwashed, execution is to happen. As the story persists, she plots with the fairy godmother to override the king and kill him herself.’Cinderella’ the book,is a tale where a girl goes to a ball and meets Prince Charming. However, that is all a lie.that’s not the truth at all…

Fairytales are real.
It doesn’t get any better than this.
Seeing the ultimate boy-girl romance story twisting a society, and the effect it can have on people told through the queer perspective is wonderful.
Sophia knows she doesn’t fit the role she is told she should and wants nothing more than to escape. However the more she tries the more she realises how terrible the kingdom’s situation really is and determines to break the cycle.
