Turn on your torches and join Aveline Jones!
Aveline loves reading ghost stories, so a dreary half-term becomes much more exciting when she discovers a spooky old book. Not only are the stories spine-tingling, but it belonged to a girl called Primrose Penberthy, who vanished mysteriously, never to be seen again. Intrigued, Aveline decides to investigate Primrose’s disappearance, with some help from her new friend, Harold.
Now someone…or something, is stirring. And it is looking for Aveline.
The first in a deliciously spine-tingling, spooky new series, where mysteries are always solved, spirits are always laid to rest, and everybody gets to bed on time. Perfect for adventurers aged 9+ and fans of Michelle Harrison, Piers Torday and Jamie Littler.

It was spooky and fun to read. Definitely not for nighttime reading
A good ghost story for children, with just the right amount of scariness!
very spooky ,my fave character is primrose,9-14 i'd say.
This was a real page turner and actually very eerie, which I feel would appeal to Y5 and above. I have recommended it to my class and the waiting list is long!
This is terrifying! For a children's book, it is certainly a bit of a psychological thriller and keeps yopu on the edge of your seat throughout!
What I loved most about it is the powerful setting descriptions and the characters: Aveline's aunt and her new friend, Harold.
Amazing but very scary at the same time
This is a great book for people who like spooky stories it is a fictional book all about a girl who likes reading ghost stories (Aveline).
That i love the mystery and scary stories that they included and that they were real
This book was spine chilling but was very enjoyable. I loved this. It could've been a bit scarier though.
My Year 5 class were gripped, and this book hooked them on horror. 'The Haunting of Aveline Jones' earned a solid 4/5 stars from us. Perfect for ages 9 and above, it follows Aveline's courageous journey to uncover the mysteries of an old seaside town. The blend of suspense and adventure kept us on the edge of our seats, making it a must-read for young thrill-seekers.
I really was keen to read this book as myself i love reading horror books so i decided to give the book a try. When i read the whole book, it was pretty nice but the only thing the author could have is a bit more to the plots to make it slightly more interesting but overall it was fine.
I recommened this for someone who is not scared easily , I loved
I could not even walk upstairs by my self I was extremely scared but I was amazed-
Fab book, written really well. Read this in 2 days, kept me reading. Great little story
It really creeped me out which is the best thing about ghosts stories! I am glad I don’t live near the sea so that the ghost of Cora Poole wouldn’t be able to stalk me! I liked Primrose and felt empathy for her because of the fate she suffered. Aveline is a great detective and I have already asked the library for the next one, the bewitching of Aveline Jones.
It was very creepy and scary. My favorite character was Aveline or her aunt. It interested me because when I started reading it I couldn’t put it down and you didn’t see anything coming. I would recommend it to older children because I’m 9 and parts of it scared me. Thankyou for reading this
Super awesome and super scary gave me nightmares for a whole week but otherwise loved it a whole lot
This is the best book I’ve ever read
It chilled me to the bone...
It was very good because it was very descriptive
I really love this book! I love how at the end if each chapter, the author adds a little paragraph that includes CREEPY thing such as her finding someone or something in the corner of her bedroom!! That book gave me the shivers down my spine and it still does!!
Creepy and unnerving! I read this book in one go. Aveline is forced to stay with her strange Aunt in a quiet Cornish village where creepy child scarecrows keep appearing and the weather is unusually cold and stormy. Aveline finds a ghost book in the local bookshop and is surprised to find the last story (set in the village she is staying in) has been crossed out. When she queries this with the bookshop owner he finds a diary written by the girl who donated the book. Aveline eventually decides to read the diary and discovers that it’s owner mysteriously...
Read more...Good for 8-12 year olds who might like to be pleasantly thrilled by a ghost story without being very frightened. The writer deliberately introduces a helpful understanding ghost to balance the vengeful ghost which features. There is also a very engaging mystery element as the protagonist works out the story behind the hauntings. I was glad that Aunt Lilian, who seemed like the worst kind of strict teacher caricature to begin with, turned out to be rather different in the end.
I don’t normally like books that scare but this kept me hooked. I read it in one session. I loved the description of the book shop as deliciously gloomy. The way the book was illustrated with the scarecrows added to the story. I know a lot of children who would enjoy this and I think it would make an excellent story time read aloud.
What a great book. A real page turner. Read in a few hours...one of those I wanted to finish but didn't want to end all at the same time. The friendship between Aveline and Harold will relate to so many. Love, love, love this book. I have ordered the second and can't wait to read it.
not my cup of tea
I borrowed this book from my school library, I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did. This book is another thriller and once you find out what the “scarecrows” are, you will be spooked. This is a MUST HAVE!! On my bookshelf!
Few ghostly stories for children really are spine chilling ...but this is an exception. Short but very good and the start of a series. The tale was believable yet scary . Great stuff
I was looking for some horror books suitable for a group of 10-11 year olds I have been working with this year. The Haunting of Aveline Jones was recommended to me by a bookseller in Waterstones and I am very glad it was. I highly recommend this book. It was suitably spooky, with the author keeping you guessing at each turn. The descriptions were so vivid, you felt that you were there smelling the sea and experiencing the storms. I have already purchased the next in the series and look forward to reading it.
Loved this book. Hooked you in from the start. I loved the main character Aveline. She was a very curious, determined and brave girl and I really enjoyed the setting and the plot. Will buy the sequel and potentially read in class or assign to a literature circle.
I can definitely rate this book more than 110 stars if I could but this spine-tingling tale
sends shivers down my spines. Aveline discovers a supernatural book which was owned by a
girl named Primrose Penberthy but one story might have really seemed to haunt Primrose and
she soon goes missing. Will Aveline and her new bookshop friends find out the mystery behind
the tale and Primrose?
"I'll be sleeping with the lights on tonight!" You can find out more of Aveline's mysteries
in the second book in the series!!!!!
