Sidesplitting middle grade comedy, with serious heart (and one very funny llama). Illustrated by Allen Fatimaharan, the official illustrator for World Book Day 2022.
Shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize Winner of a Made for Mums Gold Award Yasmin Shah is a ten-year-old girl who is part of a big, noisy family and doesn’t ever speak. Levi is a rude, sassy toy llama, who talks A LOT and has come to wreak havoc in Yasmin’s life. Yasmin tries everything she can to escape Levi, but she can’t help being dragged along on his crazy antics – and every day brings a new surprise, whether that’s an erupting bin, a flying tuna fish, or a hat made from knickers. Life is never boring with Levi around – and could it be that he has a secret plan to help Yasmin find her voice? Annabelle Sami is a writer, director and performer who currently works in the arts. While reading children’s books when babysitting she realised there was a lack of representation of funny girls and diverse characters in children’s books – and she decided to do something about it. Growing up mixed-race, she never found her own life reflected in a book and now it’s her mission to make sure that every spirited, witty and adventurous girl has her own special book that she can relate to. It's a fiction book and my favourite person was mama lama because she could make a lama real or an alive Teddy.
I like the aunty in the story best as she is so dominating.
I like this book because it is funny and has a good story. I would recommend it the people who like comedy, animals and secret agents.
imaginative very cheecky and funny and vey loud but yasmen is very quite
Quite an enjoyable little read. 🦙
I loved this book and enjoy learning about the main character Yasmin shah even though in the book she was shy she was a brilliant character. In this fiction book there is also a llama called Levi and all he does is make Yasmin cross. However, in the end they become great friends and Yasmin took Levi everywhere she went.
I loved this book espesially the part where Yasmin finds the llama. i liked Yasmin the best. I would recommend it to anyone who likes silly fun.
That Levi the llama is funny.
If you like mischief, drama and mayhem read this amazing book.
Yasmin Shah is a student that doesn't speak and her life is turned upside down by a talking toy llama.
A pleasant, humorous story of a toy llama playing pranks to try and help Jasmine find her voice. Raises themes of friendship, communication and mutism as well as family dynamics. A funny, feel good story
This was a funny book about a girl of Pakistani origin, who is given a cuddly llama toy as a present, which becomes real and causes havoc for her.
It was really funny and I can see the children just loving and engaging with this book.
It’s good to have books with characters that represent you. Being of Pakistani heritage myself, I found lots of the home details and situations hilarious.
Highly recommend it for years 3 and above.
I thought the book was good, I would not like a llama like levi in my life because he would be too noisy. The book could be inspirational to people who are quiet.
Read to a year 4 class who thoroughly enjoyed it. Tackles elective mutism is a sensitive manner. Very humourous. Good read aloud.
This book is super funny! A funny bit is where the llama came all the way back to Yasmin's house, even when she had taken it away as she was trying to get rid of it.
I really liked reading the book. The llama is my favourite character because is a talking llama which can turn into a toy. I would recommend this book to my friends.
A funny, well written, thoughtful story. A magical story about truly being who you are, but also allowing yourself to enjoy the playful characteristics you might often hide as a child in a large family.
Annabelle Sami provides much needed representation to childrens literature in the UK. What an excellent opportunity for children of minority ethic to read a book about a child just like themselves. An excellent author...we all need more of Sami's writing in our lives!
I thought this book was really good because it made me laugh. It was funny when the llama shouted it's "llama time". My favourite character was the llama because he was really exciting to see how he could get out of lots of trouble. I would recommend this book to Ellie because she likes really funny books.
This story is hilarious and is guaranteed to make all readers laugh. The main protagonist, Yasmin, has a likeable personality that shines through despite not speaking a single word for most of the book! I loved the depiction of Yasmin's Pakistani East London family who, despite having overbearing tendencies, are incredible lovable and want what's best for Yasmin. Key themes throughout include friendship and finding confidence in being yourself which I think will inspire children who read this to find their voice. The narration throughout helps to explain parts of the story and makes the story appropriate for read-aloud.
