A stunning fantasy debut, enter the unique world of the Spell Breathers.
Spell Breathing does not come naturally to Rayne – she loathes the hours of practice, the stacks of scrolls, and the snapping mud devils that cover her mothers precious spell book.
But it is spell breathing that keeps her village safe from the dreaded monster curse that plagues their world. It is ancient powerful magic, but as Rayne learns to her horror . . . it is also fragile.
In one clumsy move, the magic that keeps them safe is broken, her village is plunged into danger, and an incredible adventure begins . . .
Reviews
My favourite character was Rayne because she went on a journey to find her mother. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in fantasy.
I loved this book. Rayne is certainly a very good character! I loved the part when she took the glow away from her auntie
The book was kind of funny and very interesting
An exciting fantasy adventure highlighting the dangers of trying to be independent too quickly as the last spell breather messes up spells and has to fix them. Suitable for ages 9+ due to the sense of danger.
It all started when one of my friends gave me this book to read. At first, by the cover, I was unsure if I'd like the book, so it sat in my bag for weeks. But then, I decided to read it. I wish now that I had read it sooner!
This fantastic book by Julie Pike will take you on a magical adventure with Rayne from inside the gates of Penderin to The Great Library (Frank would like to interrupt to say that the Great Library is a Citadel) and beyond. At the end, you may even learn how to write/ breathe your own spells!
This is a story of love through everything... and darkness of evil incarnate!
5/5 from me!
A lovely book that had some fantastic twists in it.
I loved seeing the character arc of the main character, Rayne, and how she faced her own personal challenges as well as that of saving her village.
It's a definite recommended text!
I liked that the last spell breather was a fox and that the book related to animals and was mysterious. I enjoy this type of fiction
This is an amazing debut novel. Vivid descriptions and a magical feel. The grotesques in the mud book that bite, to the 'trapped and hidden' village of Penderin. I love the clever plot and the fox who is not to be trusted. Rayne's character goes through a turmoil of emotions and I love the magic spark which can be released. Super enemies in Mali and Frank the Fox. This book has everything!
I thought it was good because of the adventure and the accidental bad thing that happened to the village of Penderin.
My favourite character was Frank the fox because he pretended he broke his bones just so he could get to the great library to Mali.
I would recommend the book to my friends because I think they would like the adventure.
It’s nice
This was a fictional story about a young girl who is a spell breather, her best friend and a talking fox. when the sacred spell book is broken a monster plauge takes over her village and her friend Tom who are the only two people who seem immune to the plauge they must reach mother before something even worse accurs.
This book was a great fantasy novel aimed at year 5 and 6. Full of magic, monsters and a bit of horror as well. Really reminded me of classic fantasy books I read as a young adult. I would highly recommend this for reader who like quests, storong characters and treats you like a grown up.
I really enjoyed this because it was action-packed and drew me in. My favourite character was Tom because he is always trying to help Rayne find Mam and he is quite stubborn. My least favourite character was Mali. I liked how the author made up the spells. I recommend this to readers aged ten and above who like contemporary fantasy stories. I hope there is a sequel!
this book is full of fantasy, magic and spells (of course!) Rayne and Tom leave Penderin to take the dangerous journey to the Great Library after Rayne's mother's spell book is broken.
I thought it was an amazing story and I would reccomend it to fantasy lovers. My favourite character has to be Frank/the word master because he is a shapeshifter.
i would recommend it to someone who likes magic
