I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it disorientating at first with the uncanny setting and the language used by the protagonist being a version of English but this quickly settled as I entered into their world. The storyline was exciting and the book made me think about key issues such as notions of identity, pollution, caring for the environment, outsiders and friendship. I would thoroughly recommend this book!

A breathless, spellbinding and totally gripping read. The twists and turns in the book are brilliant and the writing is outstanding. The way the author reveals the plots, and manages to subvert what you think is an apocalyptic, dystopian thriller into something far different and far lower to home is extraordinary. This will undoubtedly provoke classroom discussion; it is a great take on all sorts of current day issues from mental health to consumerism to survival to trust to family and far more besides. My heart still hasn't slowed down from the ending - outstanding writing and an equally outstanding book!

This has been my favourite read of the year so far. I love the way the story developed so that as a reader you are completely in the dark as to what is happening at first, then slowly you can begin to guess as to what has happened between the two main characters to bring them to the point at which we meet them. Darren Simpson has created a world called Hinterland which unfolds before your eyes as you read the adventures of Landfill and his many animal friends. It would make an excellent class novel as it opens up so many areas of discussion including mental health, healthy relationships, how society treat those with alternative lifestyles, the greed and waste of mankind. I have recommended this book to every teacher in my school, it's a must read.

In interesting book about a young boy, Landfill, and a man, Babagoo, who live, sectioned off, away from society with only animals and each other for company. People outside the walls of their home are said to have 'The Hunger' and therefore the pair only ever leave their area to scavenge for food. But as Landfill gets older, curiosity gets the better of him. He starts to question their life and what is beyond the walls.

I enjoyed the slow build of the characters and story in this book. Landfill and Babagoo had their own words for things, often in line with how a toddler would speak (e.g. 'amnals' for animals) which would be interesting to use when teaching formal and informal voice.

This book is filled with unexpected discoveries and twist. Many names used in this book left me in a confused and annoyed state. But when I realised that all these names belong to authors who the best of their times , it impressed me. Land fill lived his whole life as a scavenger and Babagoo has always been there to Gaurd him . Land fill longs to venture outside the walls and to discover things beyond Hinderland.

The book is about a boy called Landfill who's lived his whole life as a scavenger. He was found as a baby and raised by an old man, Babagoo. The story follows Landfill as he makes a friend with an 'outsider'. Landfill is very unsure of this friendship as he has never experienced anything like it. Wow! What a massive emotional rollercoaster ride of a book. I think I pretty much cried for the last 2 chapters of the book. I think the last 4 chapters changed everything for me. There are so many twists and turns, and each one is brilliant. This is ridiculously well written book and I loved reading every minute of it. I found myself frustrated, sad, angry, happy and sometimes all within a short space of time. I think the character I most relate to is Dawn because she constantly wants to help Landfill, she's very caring and adventurous. It completely peaked my curiosity and I couldn't put it down. I'd reread it in a heart beat but I just need a minute to process everything before I dive back in! That ending, was beautiful and sad. The blurb does not do this book justice.
