A stirring and heart-warming tale of a young deaf girl who is determined to make a difference, the perfect read for fans of Wonder.

Iris was born deaf, but she’s never let that define her; after all, it’s the only life she’s ever known. And until recently she wasn’t even very lonely, because her grandparents are both deaf, too. But Grandpa has just died and Grandma’s not the same without him. The only place Iris really feels at home anymore is in her electronics workshop where she loves taking apart antique radios.

Then, during a science lesson about sound waves, Iris finds out about a whale who is unable to communicate with other whales. The lonely whale awakens something in Iris. She’s determined to show him that someone in the world knows he’s there.

Iris works on a foolproof plan to help the whale but she soon realises that that is not enough: Iris wants to find the whale herself. One stolen credit card, two cruise ship tickets, and the adventure of a lifetime later, Iris and the whale each break through isolation to help one another be truly heard in ways that neither had ever expected.

Winner of the Schneider Family Book Award, young children category, for books that embody an artistic expression of the disability experience.

I like this book because the main character(Iris - who is my also my favourite character) is deaf which you don't usually find in most books.
Iris finds out about a whale who cannot communicate and she wants to use her tech skills to help it.
I would recommend this book because it helps you understand more about deaf people and the challenges they face.

Full of adventure this book is about a deaf person who wants to go and see a whale. This whale is singing but nobody can understand him. They followed their heart and did whatever made them happy

This book is about a deaf girl who is desperate to communicate with a whale who is lonely and different from other whales. I either like a book or I do not, and this book was not one of my favourites.

This book was very interesting and slightly scary.
It is about a girl called Iris who is deaf and feels alone in the world because all of her family has hearing.
She has no friends in school except a teacher that understands sign language,Mr Charles.
Iris is named after a Sie whale that beached its self and died.Once people had learned about her she was buried.

There is a whale named Blue 55 who can't talk to other whales like Iris can't talk to other people.
Blue 55 was abandoned as calf because he has a different song to other whales.

Iris sets out to find Blue 55!!

Enjoyed this book about a deaf girl and her journey to find a whale but also her journey to try and fit in as she’s never felt at home with her hearing peers.

I liked it when Iris wouldn’t give up to find blue 55. It showed perseverance and courage. I also liked the sign language.
