I just loved this! It’s Book 2 in the Hawthorn and Horowitz series, where the author plays Watson to Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne’s Sherlock Holmes. Ostensibly Horowitz is there to record the great detective’s progress with a baffling case in order to write another book about him. But by now, Horowitz is starting to fancy himself as a bit of a super-sleuth as well. This case involves the murder of a high-profile lawyer, who has been found beaten to death in his flat. The book combines mystery with a bit of realism, because Horowitz is (in theory) writing about himself. The narrative is peppered with references the reader can recognise and relate to, and meanwhile Hawthorne’s character is a gift: moody, egotistical, secretive and super-clever. I actually borrowed as an e-audiobook from the local library and it was a treat to listen to.

Couldn’t resist an adult read after finding it in a charity shop on holiday and loving the Magpie Murders series by Anthony earlier in the year. This one was equally weird and wonderful because the main character is Anthony himself! The plot and details are so clever that I couldn’t work out what was real and what was entirely fictional, even after reading the author interview and acknowledgements at the end. Great plot, that kept me guessing right til the end, along with our brilliant crime writer. The first one, The Word is Murder, is in order!
