In a world of dragons, song-spells, pipers and battles…
Patch Brightwater is in disgrace. Thrown in jail for playing a forbidden spell, he is no one’s idea of a hero. But then he discovers a deadly truth – the evil Piper of Hamelyn is on the loose. With the help of Wren, a girl cursed to live as a rat, and Barver, a fire-breathing dracogriff, Patch must stop the Piper sparking the biggest battle of them all.
Three accidental heroes versus one legendary villain…an epic adventure is born.
A perfectly pitched fantasy adventure for readers aged 9+ and for fans of The Hobbit and How to Train Your Dragon.
It was a Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month in 2018.

It was great!
I enjoyed this book overall. I struggled to get in to it at first, but as the plot moved on I started to enjoy it more. I tend to listen to books as audio books and at times had to pause to recap which character was which. I think this was due to sometimes characters being referred to their title and not their name.
I enjoyed the relationship that developed between the 3 main characters.
The book leads beautifully on to the next book and story, which I quickly read after.
It was mysterious and calm at the same time
I loved 'A Darkness Of Dragons', it's a very good book and has inspired me to write a lot more books myself!
I liked Wren the most and I would recommend it.
l liked this book because how adventurous it was. Patch Brightwater is a piper and has played a forbidden song called the Dance a is thrown in jail. He has found a girl called Wren who was cursed by a sorcerer to live as a rat. A week later the dragons come to kill the evil Hamelyn piper which is a fake and the real hamelyn piper is free.
My favourite character is Barver a dracogriff
This book is amazing but a bit scary in places. It has friendship and love it is imaginative in a really good way!
I liked this because it shows how the world has different options on tinges but sometimes they don't apprecaite your opines
I really enjoyed this fictional story about a piper who is imprisoned for playing a forbidden song on his pipe. It is very exciting but it has some frightening parts so I would recommend this for children over 8 years
Really good book, and a good main friendship. I liked the way that all of the main characters had interesting backstories that we figure out over time.
It was serious yet funny
Amazing book love to be a piper myself amazing piping.
This is an exciting adventure book filled with cliffhangers after every chapter. Although some parts were slightly frightening, it is overall a great read. I would highly recommend reading it.
I really enjoyed the inclusion of a twisted Pied Piper of Hamelyn tale in this novel.
I quickly found myself on the side of Patch, Wren and Barber, willing them to solve the mysteries which unravel as you read more of the novel. I ended up not knowing who they could trust.
The ending leaves lots of unanswered questions. I now want to read the next book in the series.
it was good
I really enjoyed this story! I liked the idea of the Pipers, and the black diamonds!
I think the book A Darkness of Dragons is an excellent book to read as there was a lot of adventure and twist and turns in the story. My favourite character is a boy called Patch Brightwater who is in disgrace as he plays a forbidden ( that was banned) and finds himself in trouble. The book really interested me because it gradually introduced new characters like a girl named Wren (who was forced to live with a curse and a dracogriff / griffin). I would recommend this book to 9 years and older as this had mixed emotions like sad, happy, scared and a lot of excitement.
Darkness of Dragons is great! I love Wren as she is such a kind and quirky character. I can't wait to read book 2!
"There is magic in music. Listen..."
A pacey fantasy tale of myth, magic, adventure and true friendship.
When Patch, a young Piper plays the forbidden 'dance' (banned since the manaical and now imprisoned Pied Piper of Hamelyn played it,) he finds himself in deep trouble. With the help of a cursed girl, Wren and a dracogriff, Barver, they set off on a multitude of adventures, unearthing dark secrets and facing a powerful enemy.
I really enjoyed the idea that the traidtional stories of the Pied Piper are wrongly told and as the book ends with many threads unanswered, am really looking forward to reading the sequel.
This book was very fun and adventurous. It was set in a magical world full of mythical beasts on a quest to save the world from the dreaded Hamelyn Piper!
This book was my favourite . I had it as a price of homework and it was funny. In this book, patch is in jail for playing a forbidden time and then breaks out with the lies piper meeting a eat who is a human and a Dragon . Then tried to save the world from the lies piper himswlf.
This book starts with a piper who uses an illegal song to try to save a village from thousands of rats. Patch fails and is arrested by the elite pipers, but not without taking a cursed human, cursed to be a rat, who contacted Patch by writing chalk on a wall. He teaches her Merisax sign language in prison and Patch and Wren become friends. When thousands of dragons come demanding to have the Hamelyn Piper, the worst piper in history who abducted and killed human and dragon children with his piping skills. When he is taken, Patch escapes, after taking off then Hamelyn Piper's mask that stopped him talking and piping and hearing that the prisoner is not the Hamelyn Piper. Along with a dracogriff and Wren the rat, Patch tracks the Hamelyn Piper to a gathering of people, where he is using black diamond pipes (an illegal substance) to make a piper army with his legendary piping skills. However, Patch wears the mask inside out, stopping him being affected by the piping. He destroys the pipes and saves the pipers, but the Hamelyn Piper escapes.
This book gets creepy in some parts but then it stops with a cliff hanger
This book is my favourite book ever because of all the very funny trio. My favourite person was Patch Brigewater. I would recommend this to anyone.
