Ten-year-old Isla has moved from Edinburgh to the Orkney Islands with her parents, to start a new life after the death of Isla’s beloved young brother. Isla’s mother’s family is from Orkney and her father’s is from Africa, and she finds island life is very different to her former city home. Her discovery of the old Orcadian legend about the selkies, half human, half seal people, becomes the key to adjustment and acceptance.

Many strands are woven into this deceptively simple story – loss and discovery, legend and reality, the pleasures and problems of settling into a new place, the need to make new friends, the coming to terms with sadness. Jane Ray’s illustrations capture the beauty of the island landscape and integrate it perfectly with the atmosphere and rich texture of the storytelling.

The book Corey’s rock is about a boy called Corey and his family, a sister named Isla Abiona and their mum and dad. It started when Corey was little and was always having operations and had lots of scars wrote on his body. Isla did not like where she lived ( next to the beach ) and she wanted to go to her old house back in Edinburgh, to her old school and live with her old school friend, Li-Mei and her old school friends. But most of all she wanted to live with her little brother, Corey. She missed and loved Corey with all her heart. She just wanted him to live and did not care about all the operations he had to have. She always remembered what her mum had said at the funeral when he died of of so much operations when he was little and not born well.
The bit I like most is about the author who makes a magical tale and this book has great illustrations the other bit I like is the author’s great adjectives and adverbs. I advise it to anyone who has lost a member of their family and I give this book a four out of five stars.

Set in the windswept Orkney Islands, a poignant tale of loss and acceptance. Diverse characters with strong voices that would speak volumes to a more mature audience. plenty of themes to work with in a group reading setting.

It was a bit hard to understand, so I recommend it for children aged 10 or more. But the drawings were beautiful. And I understood enough to know that the story was beautiful as well. I quite liked it!

I liked this book because it was all about family, and caring for each other if a brother or sister has died. I think it is fiction, and it interested me because it taught you a lesson - make people happy when a sad event has occurred. I would recommend it for children aged 6-9.

This book is a very quick read but it has a the story of a lifetime in such few pages. It is written in poems but the narrator has such a lot to say.
