The first book in the award-winning Mortal Engines quartet. In a dangerous future, huge motorized cities hunt, attack and fight each other for survival. As London pursues a small town, young apprentice Tom is flung out into the wastelands, where a terrifying cyborg begins to hunt him down. Mortal Engines launched Philip Reeve’s brilliantly-imagined creation, the world of the Traction Era, where mobile cities fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic future. Mortal Engines won the coveted Gold Smarties Award. Now a feature film of the same name, starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan and Hugo Weaving. Produced by Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson. I listened to the audiobook version of this title. I would definitely recommended this book for science fiction, dystopia and fantasy fans. Loved the characters and the future world building. Want to read the rest of the series now.
The world was very imaginative and I liked the characters. Some times I got a little bored with the plot and it was a predictable at points
Very adventurous and a loving story. I never wanted to stop reading it.
I enjoyed reading mortal engines because, there was a lot of twists and turns and you never knew what was going to happen next. My favourite character was Hester Shaw and Anna Fang because they have both had hard and painful pasts and where both outstandingly brave. I have recommended this book to anybody I could but I will say I would recommend this book to good readers who are 9+.
Until this point, my all-time, favourite series had been Lord of the Rings....but this is something else!! The whole idea is just mind-blowing with mobile cities roaming the landscape of the globe, hunting each other in an effort to survive. The descriptions of both settings and characters are startlingly vivid and I was completely invested in the story of the main protagonists early on in the text - I couldn't stop reading until the series reached its climax in the final book!!! Just epic writing!
Very exciting. I liked the disfigured girl the most, she was interesting. Yes I would highly recommend this book if you like adventure and fantasy.
I was surprised to enjoy it as much as I did. I wasn't expecting to find such great characters in science fiction.
I wasn’t impressed with this book. It seemed to take a long time for any plot development to happen and, when it did, it was disappointing.
I thought this was terrific. It is so creative and is a fascinating depiction of a dystopian world. Fast-paced, it is hard to put down! Great for good readers 10 and above.
Very dramatic book and imagines a very different future with London on traction wheels! Big towns eating small towns! Lots of action and sad in places too. Enjoyed this book very much.
It was ok, movie is better!
I liked this book because it was really interesting and based in the future, where different countries and cities had made huge machines and put historical buildings and houses on top and would go around the world destroying other machines to survive.
My favourite character was Hester Shaw because her parents had been killed but she still persevered to stop London from destroying everyone.
I would recommend this book, I really enjoyed reading it.
This was totally out of my reading comfort zone but one of the children had shown an interest but didn't want to commit. It took me a while to get into the mindset of the book but when I did I loved it. Raised so many questions about what could happen, how did they get there. Would definitely suggest it, challenging but with it.
I would recommend this AMAZING book to older readers and perhaps some young adults
I liked the idea of moving cities, but it was a sad ending.
Mortal Engines describe a post-apocalyptic future where there is chaos and cruelty. Cities are literally hunting each other down and destroying one another in order to gain resources and power. Larger cities prey on the weak and any settlements which are not moving are seen as an abomination, backwards and against the evolution of the way society now lives. I felt that the character development was good and the way that Tom and Hester interacted throughout fit with their nature but towards the end it felt very rushed and some events I didn't feel linked in the same way as others. I would recommend it to people who enjoy futuristic stories with a bit of action.
This book was very exciting, and I really enjoyed it. My favourite character was Kathrine because she was kind.
This book is a really good dystopian novel London moving around how cool is that my favourite character was Hester Shaw.
Mortal Engines is a Fiction book about the dangerous future and an ancient killing machine. I liked Tom the most because he is brave and trustworthy. My favourite part of the story was when Tom and Hester found out that Valentine was in the huge city, destroying the air fleet. Another tragic event was when Valentine devoured his only daughter. I would recommend this story to 10 or above who might enjoy action and some gory events.
I thought that the book was really good and you could follow it easily. My favorite character was tom as he held Hester up during hard times. yes I would recommend it to all of my friends and others at school
It was quite groom but it was still exciting
I liked Hester Shaw the best because she was really interesting and even though she wasn't the best looking person her character really vibrant and she didn't struggle to express herself.
I would recommend it to someone else because it's an amazing book and I would love to read to the next one in the trilogy.
It was VERY exiting and had some great cliffhangers.
I liked the story because of all the machines that were in it. I would recommend it to others.
It’s dangerous. I liked it i recommend 9+
