This was shortlisted for the 2019 CWA Debut Dagger Awards and I can absolutely understand why. It’s set in the East End of London and starts with an investigation into the murder of the headmistress of a local school. DCI Maya Rahman hopes it’s an isolated case but then there’s another killing. In this multicultural area there are all sorts of religious tensions, secrets and prejudices and the author explores all the issues incredibly well. It's fast-paced, cleverly constructed, interesting and very believable. This is definitely an author to watch.
