This was a lovely fantasy book that moved the plot on very quickly. It was quite tense at times but had a great ending.
Wonderful book. Full of magic, adventure and family loyalty.
It's amazing that the widdershins are under a curse and they can't leave crostone
"A Pinch of Magic" by Michelle Harrison is a delightful blend of magic, mystery, and the enduring bond of sisterhood that will capture the hearts of readers young and old alike. The story centers around the Widdershins sisters—Betty, Fliss, and Charlie—who live on the dreary, isolated Crowstone Island. Their lives take a dramatic turn when they discover that their family is cursed, destined never to leave the island, and that they each possess a magical item with unique powers. It is a magical book sailing me across seas and fantasies of this book.
Amazing book,I definitely recommend!
Lovely. When I first started reading I couldn't put it down.
it is just repeting all the stuff they say
i would give it a 5 but it's a bit dark and spooky. however, the plots are amazing and i would recommend it to teens maybe, but i thinl the book is trying to tell us that we should never give up, or there's always a bright side, because even though they were never allowed to leave their home town, in the end, they persevered and did it in the end and the curse was broken.
I liked that it leaves you on a cliffhanger and it is funny. It was magical! I would recommend to others.
A magical story of three sisters living on the imaginary island of Crowstone where they are trapped by a curse that stops them from ever leaving.
The detailed descriptions of both places and characters, draw you deep in to the story making it easy to imagine not only what the sisters and other characters are like but also where they live and go as they seek to break the curse. Each sister has her own unique personality but all are brave, strong and caring. The bond between the three sisters is beautiful and is made all the more real by being far from perfect as they make mistakes, annoy one another and slowly over time become closer.
I loved the adventure of the story, the teamwork and trust, desperately wanting the sisters to succeed I couldn’t wait to find out how and where they would be led next.
The first book in a trilogy of stories A Pinch of Magic also works well as a stand alone novel.
really interesting pretty scary
its a really good story line and its about 3 sisters.
The best book ever
An thrilling book with many twists. A story of three sisters battling to break a mysterious curse...
Would recommend for 8+
This book was amazing. It drew me in right from the start! It was so adventurous and exciting that I read so much of it and couldn’t stop, but I wanted to savour the magic so I decided to read it over a few days. Highly recommended, even if it isn’t your type of book.
it is very magical and misterious
This book is stunning and magical throughout it all! I couldn't put it down!!!
This book was amazing. I would highly recommend for anyone from 10 upwards. I couldn't put it down. The characters were thoughtfully written. The magic running through the story was captivating. Wonderful read.
very intriguing
Three sisters trapped by a ancient curse in a small town called Crosstown and they use3items.
My favorite character is Fliss cuz she is caring for her hair, does chores and is an outsider.
I liked the book because it felt realistic and I could picture it in my head.
I would definitely recommend this book.
Loved it.
The twists and turns are so captivating
This is an exciting adventure book especially if you like magic. The author made it feel like you were watching it. I would recommend this book.
I really enjoyed it because it had magic and adventure in it.
I'm not normally a fan of magical stories but I loved that this had echoes of historical fiction which I am a big fan of. The magic and the curse were all believeable within the setting created. The author has created layers for each character that make them likebale but also give them an edge. You feel for each character but also find yourself lead to mistrust each at times. A very well written story that I highly recommend.
I loved a pinch of magic it was amazing so full of magic and curses. I was glued to the pages from start to finish. I couldn't pick a favourite character because a was a mix of two characters, Betty and Charlie. If i had to chose three words to discribe a Pinch of Magic they would be Magic, Curses and adventure.
It involves magic items
A good book that seemed slow to start but it definitely picked up pace. I think Gran was my favourite character as her steely nature made me think of my own Nanna and how she shouldn't be crossed either!
Magical
It was really interesting and exciting because there is a lot of action in this story and the characters are interesting and unique!
As I have stated previously, I often read fictional books - and this one was no exception. This was my first book by this author and I was instantly grasped by the concept and the plot. Blurb:
The Widdershins sisters, Betty, Fliss and Charlie are trapped, prevented from leaving their home on Crowstone by an ancient family curse. When they inherit three magical objects with the power to change their fate, adventure beckons. But are they being led into even greater danger?
The characters were very appealing with a wide age range, I particularly liked their grandmother however - their lone guardian through much of the story. However, we soon find out that their widower father is locked in the fearsome, gruesome prison. Betty was the adventurous one of course, the one with nerve and dare, a spark that led her through the book. Fliss was kind and caring, perhaps a little too fond of boys and the oldest of the lot. Her complete opposite was Charlie - the duo's youngest sibling. Quirky, mischievous and a wild animal lover this six year old carried round her tooth and also happened to be a key character in the sisters' future.
There were many more characters as well, though I particularly liked the arch of the so called "villain" Sorsha, a girl who fell from the prison tower long ago. In the first half of the story we the girls inherit a series of magical objects - family heirlooms. However, they have also inherited a terrible curse which restricts all the women by the name Widdershins from leaving their small island. If they leave and do not return before the next day's sunrise - they will die a terrible death. Betty and her sisters try to deal with the aftermath of this not so pleasant news and eventually Betty finds a mysterious letter from the prison their father is kept at - only to discover that the letter isn't from their father and a stranger their grandmother has been seeing. Cue Colton, one of the new protagonists who says he knows how to break the curse. The sisters believe him and break him out and let's just say it's chaos from then on.
I found the objects the sisters were gifted fascinating too. The objects could only be used by the current owners and the magical power (we eventually find out the objects contain the power of Sorsha and that they were stolen by her malicious sister Prue) inhabits normal day-to-day objects like a mirror, a set of Russian dolls and a bag. Prue and Sorsha's arch was amazing - filled with jealousy and silent envy. Fingerty is the main reason they knew of the tale though, and I find his origins very interesting for he is a released convict of the prison.
The only "bad" thing that I found about this book was the ending. They resolved the whole curse by going back to Sorsha and Prue's time - before the curse was invented using the bag. I suppose time travel worked in this story but for me, I hated how no one apart from the three of them could remember what had happened in the curse, it was never explained how they could and their grandmother couldn't, even when they were all involved. Other than that, the book was awesome and I recommend it to children aged 9-13.
