A gunman is terrorising young women in the Cathedral town of Laffteron. What – if anything – links the apparently random murders? Is the marksman with the rifle the same as the killer with the handgun?

The Simon Serrailler series began back in 2004 and comprised eleven books; and I rate them all highly. Recently I've been re-reading some of them as e-books and it has just reinforced my view that they're not just excellent mysteries, they're also novels where the crimes sometimes seem secondary to the story itself. This makes them very readable. The Vows of Silence is Book 4 and DCS Serrailler is investigating a series of apparently random murders, where young women have been shot dead. No-one is sure whether the police should be looking for one marksman or more. At the same time Serrailler is struggling to cope with a family tragedy. Susan Hill really does achieve a wonderful balance between crime and family concerns and although these books are now old they're well worth reading. They are stories you can immerse yourself in.
