This is a William South detective novel, set in Dungeness, with flashbacks to Northern Ireland. Detective Inspector Cupidi is newly arrived in the area and charged with investigating a murder. The victim is actually a neighbour and birdwatching friend of William South’s and, before the police realise he knows the murdered man, South has been asked to work with Cupidi to help her familiarise herself with the area. The relationship between the two is difficult, although after South forms a bond with Cupidi’s daughter, Zoe, it gets a bit easier. During the investigation South’s past in Northern Ireland comes into play. This isn’t the first book in this series and I've read several of the others, but they are always well-paced, believable and very enjoyable. The linking stories in this one add another depth.
