The year is 1803, and Darcy and Elizabeth have been married for six years. There are now two handsome and healthy sons in the nursery, Elizabeth’s beloved sister Jane and her husband Bingley live nearby and the orderly world of Pemberley seems unassailable. But all this is threatened on the eve of the annual autumn ball.

P.D. James’s said in an interview that Jane Austen was her favourite author, and that she read all of Austen’s novels at least once a year. In 2011 she published this, her last book, as a tribute to Austen, imagining a mystery involving many of the characters from Pride & Prejudice, and set at Pemberley. James said she’d tried to find an echo of Austen’s voice in the telling of the story, and I think that’s one of the reasons this is so interesting to read. In addition, of course, it’s a good murder mystery, beautifully told, with all the detail and atmosphere you’d expect from P.D. James. I thought it was terrific.
