The critically-acclaimed debut novel from the globally bestselling author of Normal People and Beautiful World, Where Are You.
Frances is twenty-one years old, cool-headed and observant. At night she performs spoken word with her best friend Bobbi, who used to be her girlfriend. When they are befriended by Melissa, a well-known journalist who is married to Nick, an actor, they enter a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Provence, beginning a complex ménage-à-quatre. But when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer, Frances is forced to honestly confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time.

This is a phenomenally well-written debut, exploring ideas of female friendship, sexuality, class, and selfhood. The writing is lucid and yet complex, and the characters are richly developed. Rooney has a unique style of her own, and I found this to be an even more rewarding read than 'Normal People'. I would highly recommend this book to my students regardless of age or gender, and will no doubt revisit this novel in the years to come.
I loved this book. I thought that that characterisation of the main character, Frances, was fantastic; I could resonate with so many of her inner thoughts. I loved her as a character, and fell in love with Nick as she did, hating Melissa as she did too. I only marked it down to 4/5 because I find some of Rooney's writing to be a little clunky at times, but this wasn't to the detriment of my enjoyment of the story. I would recommend this book whole-heartedly and have already lent it to my mum!
