She doesn’t know where she’s going, or what’s going to happen to her when she gets there.Shirley is billeted in the country, with two boys from East End London, Kevin and Archie – and their experiences living in the strange, half-empty Red House, with the mysterious and reclusive Mrs Waverley, will change their lives for ever.

I really liked this book as it is about world war 2 what i am learning about.
This book is an amazing tale of a young girl evacuated to the country as war is about to be declared. It's tells it from her perspective and is well written that you can paint a picture of her experience in your own imagination.
My favourite part in this book was when the boys thought the army [shop] van for their camp beds came and they thought it was the real army as war was going on. My favourite character was Mrs Waverly because she had a dolls house and still played with it as a grown woman. I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventurous books as they escape going on a big adventure to London from the countryside.

This story is about a 10-year old girl called Shirley who gets evacuated to another country. She really misses her mum and dad but when the war is over they might be together again.
It was such a good book, I even read it in the bath!
I think It needs a bit more detail
Loved the book.
OMG!I Loved This Book! 10000/5! Had Me Reading!

The story was fiction. The main character was Shirley and she was really nice to people and brave.

I thought that it was eneternaining because it was about evacuees from the World War and im very interested on that topic. Also, Jacqueline Wilson is a fantastic writer. My favourite character was probably the main character, Shirley because she was loyal, brave an kind.
it was a bit sad at pionts
This book is very interesting. It’s a fiction book all about war of Germany 🇩🇪 VS England.I love Chubby, their new nanny when the are evacuated to the country for safety.Shirley(the girl who has been evacuated) is not really excited. But to her surprise, she and her ‘friend’ run away to London and meet their parents.
soo emotional.
I thought this was a fantastic book and really showed the kindness and friendship the world had. My favourite character was Shirley because no matter what happened to her she always stood up for who & what she believed in.
As we have previous learned about the World Wars and the affects that it had on everyday people, this particular perspective of these young children evacuated into these temporary family interested me, especially the thoughts of the main character, including wanting to know about her family; wanting to understand the strange, mysterious owner that had welcomed them into her home, and wanting to explore the small village and try her best to fit in her "new world."
This is a fictional book based in the second world War. The main character who's name name is Shirley has to be evacuated from the busy city in London to a small village in the countryside, she moves in with to women called Mrs waverly and her assistant , chubby. Shirley had two boys living with her who's names were Archie and Kevin , read as they embark on journeys and adventures. Perfect for fans of hetty feather
It was very boring in some parts. It could’ve been improved by making it a little easier to understand the writing. It is about a girl who is evacuated by the war and separated from her mother. It gets quite sad and some parts. I would recommend this book for history lovers.
