An action-packed Anglo-Saxon tale of one boy’s journey to the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
The story of one Anglo-Saxon boy’s journey to the Battle of Hastings in 1066: Key Stage 2 History brought to life as battle-packed adventure.
1065: Magnus is the son of Harold Godwinson, lord of the Southern Saxons and ruthlessly ambitious claimant to the throne of England. Overnight, Magnus finds himself cast centre-stage in the blood-soaked family feud that led to one of history’s most famous battles.
This is the family tragedy behind 1066: live it with Magnus, as the wolves of history close in on his Anglo-Saxon boyhood.

This boy won for his father
l read Anglo Saxon Boy. l liked this book because the adventure you went on with the main character Magnus was really breath taking. My favourite character was Magnus because he was very brave going out to fight but caring for his mother and his father. I would rate this book 4 stars and recommend it for ages 10+ as it is really quite gory.
This book included great description about that period of time, I couldn’t put the book down.
Historical and entertaining. I learnt a lot. A bit gruesome in parts but excellent figurative language. I'd recommend it for anyone older than 8.
A great adventure story that gives some insight to life in Anglo -Saxon England
I enjoyed this book. Read it ahead of teaching Anglo-Saxons and Vikings starting in September.
I really love history and this book was based on the fight for the throne in 1066AD. Some of the characters in the book were fictional and others were real. It is very action-packed and I found it a real page-turner!
I thought it was a really good book because there was so much adventure. My favourite character was Magnus Because he always carried a sword around with him. I would recommend this to advanced readers or year 6 up.
I like how the main character is quite fierce.
I thought this book was a brilliant mixture of fiction and historical facts which contextualises the Anglo-Saxon period for children. I enjoyed the pace of the book and how the author chose to focus on Anglo-Saxon life and battles. I think this would help it appeal to a range of readers and could work well as a reading for pleasure book as well as a class read. I also liked that, at the end, the author reflected with a historical note which help links the history to the fiction. The inclusion of pictures also helped the reader to visualise the storyline.
I personally liked the character of Hakon as I think he portrayed a lot of admirable characteristics that could provide some good discussion points between what was expected in Anglo-Saxon times and what we think of as acceptable now. For example, the part where Hakon goes into battle prepared to give his life is an interesting discussion point.
I would recommend this book to UKS2 children and teachers.
I chose to read this book because it was a recommended read in a sequence of English planning for persuasive writing. I liked that the main character is a young boy and the story is told from his view point. The boys in my class will enjoy the nod to the violence of battle so it might help some move from the comic book style books they love to something more formally written. I think the girls will enjoy the family detail added to the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings itself.
This book is difficult to define as fiction or no-fiction. I loved how it is based on real history and in the point of view of an unexpected person that I had never heard of before yet existed: Magnus.
This book was very interesting to read. The story is about Magnus a boy who fights a battle that becomes one of the most famous battles in history. There is a lot of action and fighting in the story. This book is a fiction story and my favourite character is Magnus because he is so clever and brave. I would definitely recommend this book
It's about a boy who lives in Anglo-Saxon times in 1065. It's a really exciting book and you want to know what's going to happen next.
Lots of action from the start that I can imagine my class being enthralled by. A young lead character to identify with and themes of family and courage. Fits very well with Anglo-Saxon and Vikings topic. Would recommend.
the best book ever i loved it so much thrill
full of history
factual and fiction
little gruesome
GREAT
It is a book about The Battle of Hastings and other huge and minor wars from that period of time. The book is told mainly around King Harold's third son Magnus.
A very historical but entertaining book.
