Puffin Classics: the definitive collection of timeless stories, for every child.

""You know when you feel a rumbling in the ground, and people tell you it’s a tube train going by? Well, it’s not a tube train,’ Corky said. ’It’s the thing that lives in the sewers. It comes up at night, when we’re asleep.’

‘What is it?’ Ruskin asked breathlessly.

‘Krindlekrax,’ Corky replied.

There are plenty of weird and wonderful characters who live on Lizard Street. The hero of our story is Ruskin Splinter. But to be honest, Ruskin is a very unlikely hero. Small and thin, with knock-knees, thick glasses, a squeaky voice, no one at Ruskin’s school believes he’s capable of anything – all except for Ruskin’s only friend Corky, the school caretaker.

Ruskin is therefore delighted when Corky tells him the terrifying story of Krindlekrax: the giant crocodile who lives beneath their town’s streets. Finally, a chance to prove himself! But can Ruskin really save the day?

This witty, off-the-wall story is a classic rip-roaring adventure, from award-winning author Philip Ridley. Packed full of hilarious illustrations, this edition also has fun bonus activities!

I liked Ruskin because even though Corky wasn't there Ruskin had his hat with the light on it and he went down into the sewers to find Krinklekrax and he was brave. Yes I would recommend this book because it can be an inspiration for other kids to be brave.

This book is exciting and I liked the friendship between Corky and Ruskin Splinter. It was a bit sad in the middle but at the end, Ruskin is brave and saves his unusual neighbours from a mysterious creature.
I would recommend this book to my friends.

Adventurous and interesting

It's cool and a bit boring

I read this book as it was recommended by Pie Corbett as a Year 4 Page Turner. Having read a series of books that made me cry, I wanted to read something a bit more light-hearted. Unfortunately/fortunately, that was not the case, as this story was jammed-packed with emotion. However, this book was a most enjoyable read with fantastic characterisation and the perfect balance of absurdist realism.

This is my favourite book

It was about a boy called Ruskin and the Krindlekrax. Ruskin didn't know about the Krindlekrax until Corky, the school caretaker, told him a story about when he was down in the sewers and he met the Krindlekrax and then he tried to escape but the Krindlekrax bit his leg. Luckily he managed to get out. Ruskin decides to try to find the Krindlekrax. It's quite an exciting story.

The writing is simple, so the themes are a bit hidden. Will be using this in my Year 3 class in January. So, may have to use a bit more guidance when teaching it.

Great central character and wonderful themes.

This was quite a strange book, a little far-fetched and very simplistic. But I liked the themes of friendship, acceptance, belonging and bravery. I think my Year 4 class might enjoy it.

I really enjoyed this book because it helped me find out some new words I would highly recommend this book to my class and my siblings to share with.I think that this book is my favourite book I have ever read. I think the author has done so good to help children understand what it means to enjoy reading books.

Children's fiction.
Set in one fictitious street with a bid story to tell. Quirky characters and an unlikely hero. Themes explored include friendship, betrayal and loss. My Y4 class have loved it!

Wow, what a good story

It was fiction and really enjoyed this book. My favourite character was Corky, because he was always in a jolly mood and was very kind to children. He told Ruskin (the main character) that there was a monster (Krindlekrax, the crocodile) lurking in the sewages. (Corky used to work in the sewages, hence he knew about Krindlekrax). Everyone on Lizard Street thought that Krindlekrax was an underground train and not a ferocious beast. Ruskin saved the day by making a truce with Krindlekrax to never surface again, if his family continue to feed the crocodile all the leftovers from their toast and eggs.

I would definitely recommend it to boys and girls, aged 8-10.

I liked this book because it was interesting and I liked that Ruskin became a hero after being bullied at school all the time. This book is also quite sad because my favourite character dies.
Ruskin wants to play the hero in the play at school, but the part is given to another child who bullies Ruskin all the time, but used to be his friend. Ruskin only has one friend who is the school care taker, called Corky. Corky tells Ruskin about the crocodile that lives in the sewers and Ruskin wants to investigate. My favourite character is Corky because he was kind and looked after Ruskin whenever he was alone.

I really enjoyed this book because it had a good message to it - it doesn't matter what you like every one is a hero inside.
My favourite character is Ruskin. Because he was the one that fought Krindlekrax.
It is a fiction book.
Yes I would recommend this book to my friends because of the good message.
