In 1666, London’s citizens woke to see the skyline above their city’s cramped wooden houses ablaze. The Great Fire of London is a hauntingly beautiful visual re-telling of one of the most well-known disasters in the city’s history. To commemorate the 350th anniversary of the fire, powerful and sumptuous drawings from the new east London illustrator, James Weston Lewis, bring the events of November 1666 to life in this stunning gift book.
Lewis’s drawings take readers on a journey, from the single smouldering coal that falls out of the baker’s oven to the swirling clouds of ash that engulf the city and then in to the very heart of the fire itself. As the pages turn, you can witness London burning to the ground and then rebuilding again.
Children will love examining the rich detail of each spread, from the detailed city map to the drawings of London before, during and after the fire took hold. This book takes the dramatic historical information surrounding the Great Fire of London and transforms it into a breathtaking story that will transfix readers of all ages.

A factual recount of the events that lead up to, during and after the great fire of London. I enjoyed learning about this time in history in a child friendly and easy to understand way. It explained what London was like in that time, why the fire spread so quickly, who the important people of that time were and the decisions they made and the lessons learned afterwards. It also shared how we know so much about that time from first hand accounts in Pepys diary. I think the children would enjoy this book.
It was really good.
I liked this booked as it helped me learn about the great fire of London. It also has bright, colourful pictures
A lovely book to explain what happened using story-like language of younger children to be able to understand but still uses some more advanced language. Pictures are beautiful. The timeline of firefighting and mini biographies at the end are a great addition!
Brilliant way of telling children about what happened in a story-like way. The pictures are lovely and bright.
Good Book
I enjoyed learning more as I had learnt about the great fire of London at school.
I read so many houses are burned by fire , all cities destryed by fire .yes it was fiction . I learn from this book after the fire things were changed and all law were chaged in the cities. I recommened it to my friends because so many new things they can learn about fire.
An illustrated, simplified recount of what happened during The Great Fire of London. Includes what London was like at the time and which factors contributed to the fire, how the fire was started and how it progressed, how it was eventually put out and what it meant for the city afterwards. I thought this book was really interesting.
I would recommend it to someone else but it was a really long book it was very interesting and hard to read but it was a great book
My honest opinion would be an excellent book but it went “ downhill “ with its dull facts at the beginning as it contains nothing about the fire. Great job writing the book. Yours sincerely, prince Augustus Hammersmith.
It is a great book.
It has lots of history and good facts and is split into quick chapters. And it had lots of information about fire fighting
This is an interesting history book.
