A tender, lyrical tale from the author’s childhood in an idyllic English village, with environmental and conservational themes.

In this involving tale, master storyteller and former children’s laureate Michael Morpurgo revisits the ""landscape of his memories"", telling of his boyhood fifty years before. The village of Bradwell is a stone’s throw from the sea and is peopled by quirky characters such as the three Stebbing sisters, the white moustachioed Colonel Burton and Bennie the village thug. But the heroine of this story is the serene Mrs Pettigrew, who lives in a railway carriage down in the marshes with her dogs, donkey, bees and hens. Industrial reality intrudes when plans are made to build a nuclear power station on the marshes, and when a village battle ensues for and against this environmental hazard, young Michael finds himself caught up in the sad fate of Mrs Pettigrew and the landscape of his boyhood.

It was a really good book. I liked the bit where they wanted to build the power plant and the locals didn't want them to.

27 Jul 2022

I like the fact that they were trying to save the marsh.
I would recommend this book to 8+ years old.

A nice quick read with an environmental theme. Loved Mrs Pettigrew and the idea of living in a train carriage.

This book is about a man who revisits his home town, Bradwell. He tells a story of how he befriended a lady named Mrs Pettigrew. She lives in a train carriage called Pullman in a marsh. People want to build a power station in her marsh so the boy/man and his mother try to stop them. Another thing about this book is that it has quite a sad ending so I would only recommend it to people who either like or don't mind sad endings.

Miss Pettigrew was my favourite character because she was always nice to Michael. It was a really good book, but super sad, it makes you want to cry sometimes. I would recommend this to most of the people I know. I really like Michael Morpurgo books, he is one of my favourite authors.

It is a true story about Michael Morpurgo's childhood and how they destroy wildlife to make something to create electricity

This book was quite interesting and it made me feel emotional. My favourite character is Mrs Pettigrew because she's very kind. I also feel sorry for her because Mrs Pettigrew had her home destroyed to make way for a new power station. I reccomend this book to people who like sad and thought-provoking stories.

It was very sad, as Miss Petigrew died because she was very devastated because her lovely farmland became a power station. Michael then tried to help, but, of course, he could not do anything

I rated this book four out of five because It was an amazing story. I liked it because Mrs pettigrew was a lifesaver by saving a boy one day when he had a thorn in his body. Mrs pettigrew cured him in a little caravan. It interested me because Mrs pettigrew, most of the time, was never rude or unpleasant to the boy. I really enjoy Michael Morpurgo books and he is an amazing author that I like. I would recommend this book to someone as it interested me a lot.

I just loved this story because in the story there is a boy named Michael and he meets Mrs Pettigrew who never really talks to people because she lives on the marsh and then they came friends and then Michael's mother becomes friends with her too! My favourite character was Michael because he never gives up when his mother told him not be on the streets with them he still stood there! I would recommend this fantastic book!
