WINNER OF THE CILIP CARNEGIE MEDAL 2017

It’s early 1945 and a group of people trek across Germany, bound together by their desperation to reach the ship that can take them away from the war-ravaged land. Four young people, each haunted by their own dark secret, narrate their unforgettable stories. Fans of The Book Thief or Helen Dunmore’s The Siege will be totally absorbed.

This inspirational novel is based on a true story from the Second World War. When the German ship the Wilhelm Gustloff was sunk in port in early 1945 it had over 9000 civilian refugees, including children, on board. Nearly all were drowned. Ruta Sepetys, acclaimed author of Between Shades of Grey, brilliantly imagines their story.

My favourite of all the books I have read this summer. Absolutely fantastic. Each chapter was written from a different characters perspective but it all blended and came together beautifully. Based on a factual event that I had not heard of the story covered some difficult subject matter. A love story interwoven also helped it to be a page turner. Just the perfect book for me.

This is a historical novel by the same author as 'Fountains of Silence'. It is a well crafted and very moving story, told through different narrators at the end of WWII, as they try to travel to safety across Nazi Germany. Some are genuine refugees, some have more complex backgrounds, and each is hiding secrets, for their own survival. It is a gripping and upsetting book, because of the content I would recommend it to age 14 and above, and to adults.

It was really interesting, because it was the same story, but all from different people’s views. My favourite character was probably Joana because she is so inspirational being a nurse. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in WW2.

I really enjoyed reading this heart-warming, but tragic book. For anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction, romance, or tragedy, this is the book for you!
I think you should be 13 or older before you read this book.

This book is a great read. It has a tragic storyline and is a gripping novel. You can feel sympathy for all the characters and journey with each one of them. This book has also been an inspiration to me with my writing. My favourite book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It is written extremely well and told from the viewpoint of four different people. I would definitely recommend it to older readers (teens) - it is a really exciting but also very sad.
