The stunning novel set during World War One from Michael Morpurgo, the nation’s favourite storyteller and multi-million copy bestseller.

May, 1915. Alfie and his fisherman father find a girl on an uninhabited island in the Scillies – injured, thirsty, lost… and with absolutely no memory of who she is, or how she came to be there. She can say only one word: Lucy. Where has she come from? Is she a mermaid, the victim of a German U-boat, or even – as some islanders suggest – a German spy…? Only one thing is for sure: she loves music and moonlight, and it is when she listens to the gramophone that the glimmers of the girl she once was begin to appear. WW1 is raging, suspicion and fear are growing, and Alfie and Lucy are ever more under threat. But as we begin to see the story of Merry, a girl boarding a great ship for a perilous journey across the ocean, another melody enters the great symphony – and the music begins to resolve… A beautiful tour de force of family, love, war and forgiveness, this is a major new novel from the author of PRIVATE PEACEFUL – in which what was once lost may sometimes be found, washed up again on the shore…

I picked up this book because of the Bryher location (and the recognisable author name) and it didn't disappoint, I found myself missing the Scilly Isles all over again! The only downside to this book was that I was confused by what actually happened and what was fiction. Mark of a good writer I know, but personally I wish that a bit more of the plot had been based on a true story.

My favourite character was Lucy Lost ,later known as Merry. This was because she was lost in her head until she saw the German soldier. I could really recommend this book. It is quite a big book and has some emotional moments but I really loved this book.

This was really good.

This was read as a Yr5 class story at school. It is such a big book and although I enjoyed it, I found it tricky to follow when we didn't read it every day. I found that taking the book out of the library helped me to follow it in class when we did read it though.

I am currently reading this at school and it is utterly amazing and I am very moved by how the author has written this book

Kinda good. Loved the fact that it is a true story really quite interesting when you’ve gotten into it. But it gets a little boring after you’ve figured out the plot and just waiting for the characters to find out what you found out half a year ago. But still I’m not saying it’s bad it just gets a little boring that’s all. I recommend this to anyone who likes Michael Morpugo (not the sad bits there aren’t any here).

I loved how Merry finally told the family that she was called Merry and not called Lucy

A bit slow moving and predictable

A mystery book mixed with a lost child who didn’t speak and a war. The Lusitania was a passenger liner that was sunk by a German submarine. Lucy lost as she became known, didn’t speak and Lucy was not her real name and no one knew where she had come from.. read the book to find the answers!

It was a great mystery that unraveled slowly. What puzzled me the most was why the first word she said was “Lucy.” Eventually it resulted in her being called Lucy as they thought that was her name, other than that she didn’t speak. Lucy was actually referring to the Lusitania a ship that was sunk by a German missile.
If you are older than about ten it might be a two week reader, although you might need to slow down to piece it all together.

I enjoyed reading this book. I think it was good and I liked it. I would recommend it to someone who likes reading about adventure and mystery.

I thought it was one of the best books I’ve ever read.
It was factual and what amazes me is that Merry survived after everything that had happened to her.
I would defiantly recommend it to someone else because I’m sure that they would like it.

This book is amazing. It is all about a girl Alfie and his Father find on the beach of a nearby island. Starved, dehydrated and with no memory of herself, will Alfie be able to unlock her memories and find out her story...
I would recommend it to everybody because this book is heart-warming, fulfilling and comforting. It will help develop empathy and will show people the importance of listening to others because if you do, you may discover there is more to somebody than meets the eye. It is my favourite book by Michel Morpurgo.

I loved this book, my favourite character was Lucy (Merry). I started to price together what had happened, then predicted the end. I loved how narrative it was, and how beautiful the descriptions of the Scilly Isles were (I’m going there this summer because of this book).

I’m a BIG Michael Morpurgo fan !

I wish there was a rating for 10 stars and over. I absolutely loved every second reading this and I am a very big fan of Michael Morpurgo. Honestly, Michael is a very big role model for me as I want to become an author so reading is very special to me. Listen to the Moon is just fabulous.

This is a BRILLIANT book as the author sets this book to the sinking of the Lusitania and it is full of the best detail, and I couldn't stop reading!

I am not sure whether the story was real or it was made up. One of my favourite part it was when they found a girl that came out of the boat's basement. Unfortunately, in the story, she was a bit poorly and got lost so those who found her decided to adopt her.
I loved the happy ending.

Very good and quite emotional. It made me cry. It is about world war 1. Merry, I mean Lucy Lost, is a nice a sweet girl, but she doesn't talk. Is she a mermaid? Or a ghost? Or even, a german spy?

It was brilliant book about a girl and her story. She was found on a beach in the scilly isles where a boy and his family took care of her. She didn't speak much but slowly she started to reveal her story. She boarded a boat called the Lusitania which was headed to England but it was torpedoed and her mother was killed and most of the passengers. She was rescued by a German u-boat and ended up on the scilly isles where she is now.

I would totally recommend this book to anyone who like mystery and suspense.

It was set in world war 1 and it's about a girl called Merry who was sailing on a ship when it was blown up by German torpedoes.

17 Aug 2020

I loved this book because I really enjoy reading about the war and its impact on peoples' lives. Additionally, the mystery element was so intricately planned so you would have to read to the end to find the answers to your questions

A brilliant book about the past and present of a girl who must remember who she is for her future depends on it.
