This is really cool! I can't believe they found gold ingots in George's island. That is insane!
This is a really tricky one because I actually really enjoyed the story. It’s basic writing with short sentences, unimaginative vocabulary and lots of fast-paced dialogue but that doesn’t necessarily make it ‘bad’: this is great for building confidence. Misogyny is present but if used in a guided way, The Famous Five books came be studied as historical reflection on society and prejudice. There are worse values in other Blyton books although I’m not sure that makes this one acceptable with criticism!
I love these books from good ol' Enid Blyton, they're so friendly and adventurous. The Famous Five go on lots of adventures (which are basically the same each time) and each one is carefully crafted by Enid to fill children's hearts with the sense of adventure and fun. I first got given the books, a whole big collection of them, at 6 and never looked back since. I was a child who had access to a lot, like, really a lot, of books so the fact that they were my favourite was quite something! I must have read them at least 20 times each in lockdown! Enid has written other, better books since these, but there's something about the five which draws me to them every time.
So, the first of them all, five on treasure island. I have read this countless times, so am only too familiar with all the twists and turns. The 3 siblings, Julian, Dick and Anne go to stay with their prickly, moody cousin George for the first time ever. George is in fact a girl, called Georgina, but hates this and wants to be treated like a boy. At first, she is distant, hating this sudden invasion, but the cheerful honesty of Julian and Co soon win her over. She even introduces Timmy to them, her dog who lives with another boy because her parents won't let him in the house. Now, George owns her very own island, so one say they decide to sail over. As they're going out, George says, 'There's a storm brewing. A big one too!' But this doesn't stop the adventurous five from making their way to the island, for good or for bad...
Enjoy this Famous Five book, read it over and over again. It's worth it!
I enjoyed the book and specifically I like the character of Julian and of course the dog. The boat was the highlight of the story for me.
I like it
its very exciting and mysterious.
Adventure book
They found treasure
Brilliant book
The best character in my opinion was Georgina or George. She was the reason that Julian, Dick and Anne came in the holidays. At the end they all managed to escape the island, but all of them nearly got trapped! They also got lots of ingots.
i like the adventure in the Dungeon for the ingots of gold. i recommend it to other readers.
I liked Georgina the most because she is clever. It was so exciting! They found ingots in the dungeons.
