Margaret does sci fi again. She really is our new Orwell. In a recent interview she said we are 'double-plus unfree,' and that our governments treat us like cattle. As someone who once complained to my local council that UK drivers are 'farmed' for traffic fines and milked for easy money, I'd agree.
This crazy, crazy book, originally written as an E-book serial, is a classic Atwood dystopia except that it is also absurdist and self mocking. Corporatism and what passes for politics systematically destroy what integrity the individual has left. Wait: depressing? Why read this book? Actually, the book's a roller coaster; a societal challenge…and Atwood is referencing Milton, and Blake. Oh, and it's funny….
Margaret Atwood doesn't disappoint in this futuristic but all too possible novel. Dark, strange, engrossing and funny.
