Whitley Bay Book Group discussed Protest in November 2024
We were a small group this month as several of us were at a performance at the Whitley Bay Playhouse of a play about the Cramlington Train Wreckers, which ties in well with this month’s theme of protest. In this book, twenty authors reimagine the stories of people involved in key moments of British protest, with explanatory notes from historians and sociologists.
As with any compilation or anthology, the quality of the pieces was variable, as was our knowledge of the protests covered. We tended to prefer the stories which dealt with periods of history we were familiar with, and found some of the earlier ones rather inaccessible. The book was best enjoyed as an episodic read – i.e. not trying to read too many contributions at once in order to finish it before the meeting. We discussed whether it would have been better to have the explanatory pieces precede the fictional accounts, and one member recommended reading it as an audio-book.
We gave the book between 1.5 and 3.5 stars, with an average of 3.
