When Tom is sent to stay at his aunt and uncle’s house for the summer, he resigns himself to endless weeks of boredom. As he lies awake in his bed he hears the grandfather clock downstairs strike . . .eleven . . . twelve . . . thirteen . . .
Thirteen! Tom races down the stairs and out the back door, into a garden everyone told him wasn’t there. In this enchanted thirteenth hour, the garden comes alive – but Tom is never sure whether the children he meets there are real or ghosts . . . This entrancing and magical story is one of the best-loved children’s books ever written.

This book was good because I like it when Tom finds the secret garden when the Grandfather clock strikes thirteen. without anybody else knowing about it. As the story goes on, Tom sees more children. Three boys and a young girl. Their names were Hubert, James and Edgar. The girls name was Hatty. Tom and Hatty both become friends and always play with each other.
I liked Hatty best and I would recommend it
I liked this book a lot. My favourite character was Tom. I love the bit where he meets someone from the past, Hatty. You should read this book.
I enjoyed reading about Tom’s mysterious time travelling in the garden and his friendship with Hatty
It was a lovely and exciting story. I would recommend it to 8+.
Good book I recommend.
My favourite character is Hatty.
My favourite part of the story is when mrs Bartholomew and Tom were chatting about skating.
It wasn’t a five star as some bits were quite scary
Not very intense but there a lurking feeling that something massive is going to happen.
It was a fiction book about a naughty boy called Tom. He went to his Uncle and Aunty's place and found a secret garden there.
An interesting time-travelling adventure story.
I liked Hatty the most because of her adventurousness and curiosity about Tom.
I would recommend this book to people who love history.
Good.
This is my second favourite book Especially when He finds the garden that everyone told his it did exist
Would recommend this book
Sweet story. I love the way the author plays with time and ghosts.
I'm not sure how the students would see this book today, I think it's a bit too behind the times.
it is a nice and wonderful book to read I recommend it to 70% of people who love to read
This classic is one I’d never read as a child. I read it to my daughter and she and I very much enjoyed it. It is a story about time and magic and longing and how we can journey anywhere in our dreams. It has a great ending, which brings the story together perfectly. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that at times I felt the language in the story was of it’s time and not always easy to follow. Very pleased to have now read this as an adult!
I really liked reading this book as it was very detailed and allowed me to imagine the story in my head. I thought the story was a little boring in some parts but the idea of being friends with a Victorian ghost was very good. I liked Hattie the best, as she was like me. I would recommend this book as it is a great story.
If it was factual, it interested me because of how the garden was based on what somebody dreams about. In addition, it interested my of how some people can see him while others cannot, and how time can change (depending on what scene the person, called Mrs Barthelomew, dreams about). 100% recommend this book to someone who believes in magic.
it is a mysterious book when a clock strikes 13.
Recommended for everyone who wants a mystery
An old fashioned classic with a time travelling nature.
This was a good fantasy and adventure story but at times it did make me feel sad like when Tom is sent away to live with his Aunt and uncle while his brother Peter is sick and at the end when he can’t get into the garden again to see his friend Hatty.
I read the graphic adaptation of the story and the pictures were very useful in helping me understand more about the story and the special friendship that Tom has with Hatty.
This book was a nice book as it had a lot of mystery in it. I liked Hatty the best as she is so mysterious and as she grows up so quickly... Is she a ghost. I would definitely recommend this book to someone else.
I liked this book a lot because it was very interesting and made you say "What's going to happen now?" or "Noooooo!" . My favourite character was Hatty (Harriet) because at the end of the book the old lady who lives up stairs (they live in flats) was actually Harriet. That made Tom (the boy) really happy because he wanted to see her again that day and then he did. Like I said the book was great but I only rated it a 4 because some days I didn't want to read the book but when I did I loved it.
My favourite character was Hatty because she is fun and relatable to me. I guessed early on that she was Mrs Bartholomew but that didn't spoil the story for me. I think the ending could have been a bit more exciting.
This book is really interesting and after I started it I couldn’t stop. I loved when everything is revealed to Tom and how after Hatty stops dreaming Tom can’t enter the garden. I would 100% recommend this book.
I liked that the imagination was mind blowing and I liked in the end it was a dream
This was my first book by Philippa Pearce, I enjoyed it and would recommend to others.
I loved it. I was so excited to keep reading and see what would happen next...
I thought that the book was really good. It was interesting because there was a clock which stroke the thirteen hour which revealed the secret garden to the main character Tom. I liked Tom as a character as the authors makes him very funny and he makes Tom trying to figure out stuff that doesn’t make sense.
It was a fiction book and I liked Hattie the best because at the end Tom finds out something really shocking about Hattie which is that she was in fact the caretaker of the house; Tom had travelled back in time and met her as a young girl.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and time travel.
a story about time travel
I read this very quickly because I couldn't put it down.
Gentle, nostalgic, emotional, perplexing...
