A very good book which I used when I was studying The Award in Education and Training course a few years ago. It provided useful insights into teaching which helped me to complete all the units and it helped me to plan my 30 minute Microteach.
This book helped me to complete the course
From the outset, Gravells establishes that this book is designed to support learners through the TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training, and that the information provided within its pages are intended to be implemented in an adult further education setting. However, it is abundantly clear that much of the contents of this book, albeit with appropriate modifications and adaptations, can also be applied to other educational settings, like early years, primary and secondary.
In this guide, Gravells covers the basics, which provide ample information for the TQUK Level 3 course units “understanding the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training”; “understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training”; and “understanding assessment in education and training”. This book provided a steadfast foundation for my classes and assignments. Additionally, Gravells leavens the information that she provides with useful and actionable “helpful hints,” “theory into practice” tips and “examples” of scenarios that one could apply the knowledge that Gravells relays in the book.
Furthermore, Gravells writes with consistent clarity and brevity that make the book accessible to even the most novice learners. She also uses visual examples and diagrams to illustrate key points and demonstrate how to fill out, for example, the micro-teach lesson plan. I found this book to be an indispensable asset in completing my micro-teach lesson plan.
However, due to the book’s brevity, I would recommend that this book is used as a supplement to the teaching on the course rather than a substitute. Even though Gravells has updated this book to tackle topics like artificial intelligence in education and neurodiversity, there are key points and perspectives that can only be accessed through working with others in a classroom.
Overall, this book proved to be particularly useful in supporting me with consolidating my understanding of the course material and getting ahead of my coursework in some instances. However, this book should not function as a replacement to being taught the Level 3 in a classroom environment as being in the class allows one to access unique insights and perspectives that cannot be encapsulated in a textbook.
