Unforgettable tale of an orphan in Victorian London, based on the boy whose plight inspired Dr Barnardo to found his famous children’s homes.

I really liked how the book was laid out. Jim kept going on even after all the tragedies that occurred in his life. He persevered through all that happened to him. I'd recommend it to people aged 9 and above.
To be true it was a bit boring but also sad to see how children in the olden days were treated.
I read it with my class although it was sad we enjoyed the story
I loved this book as it had so many different features to it. It had him in Mr Spink’s house, him in the big house, him in the workhouse, him in the streets and him in Dr Bernardo’s house.
Very interesting
A perfect book to read alongside Oliver & Victorian history learning!
I like Jim because he didn’t fuss when he had to leave or was beaten. He was tormented many times, but did not complain
Great book, can't wait to read the next book about Jim's sisters.
This is about a Victorian boy who got kicked out of his house and is now on the run.
Jim jarvis is my favourite character
One of the best
Brilliant example of 1800 childhood experience . Fantastic historical fiction about why Doctor Barbados was founded, based on a true story!!
This was a great story and shows how Dr Barnardo's charity was started.
I thought the book interesting and hard to put down.
My favourite character was Jim because he managed to survive in the streets.
I recomend this book to Ks2 chilldren who like happy endings .
It is a very sad story teaching you to be thankful but it's a happy ending story I would recommend it to children of age 8.
I enjoy this book as it looks at life as a Victorian child in a lighthearted and enjoyable book to read. The character Jim is very easy to relate to and the way he is written makes you feel instantly sorry for him. This books also allows a chance for historical learning with the links to Dr Barnardo and his work for Victorian children.
I love the book because it tells half a true story of a boy named Jim Jarvis. his mother died in the workhouse because they were kicked out of their house. His two sisters Emily and Lizzie were with Rosie a friend of the mother Once Jim sneaked out of the workhouse to find his sisters.
I think I stopped there
I would recommend to someone else. I wont say what happend but it was good.
this story is so exciting and Jim escape from the work house!
It’s ok but not really adventurous
I thought it was very smart when he escaped
I liked jimmy
I would recommend this book
Its Nice to read and so fun
He went through difficult times but in the end he made it
This was a quite good book, i have given it a 3 out of 5 because it was quite sad and tough.
Amazing book about a young Victorian boy named Jim Jarvis. It’s about his story. First in the story Jim his mother and sisters were kicked out of their house for not having money. Jim was taken to the workhouse and later he escaped. Then he went to a lady who helped his sisters but lost everything. He lived in her shed for a while but got taken away by her grandfather just for money. He was sold to a man named nick. Grimy nick. Who had him work as a chimney sweep and doing all sorts but a while later a rope frayed and nick was directly under it. There was a bucket full of coal and he was knocked out. Jim saved his life by just calling to him. But Jim thought he could use the little bit of care to his advantage. He locked nick in a ship and put coal on top of the door which caused him to suffocate. Jim felt bad even though nick did all those bad things to him such as getting his dog to lock his jaw onto his leg and even make him work harder the next morning! But the voices in his head told him ‘Don’t feel sorry bruvver’ so he carried on walking. He later came across this green caravan and he asked if he could stay there for the time being. They gladly accepted but under one condition. He would have to help them set up a circus. Jim agreed and he was fed some nice food there too. He stayed there for a while but then went off to somewhere else. Around the end he met Dr Barnado who saved his life. He showed them the rooftops that many Victorian children slept on. Dr Barnardo felt so very bad for them and instead of the ragged school he made them a house to live in with warmth, clean clothes and even a nice place to sleep in.
Street child was amazing! It had loads of cliffhangers that made you wan't to read more! Street child's best bit was when the big, tough Grimy Nick was crying and I never expected that to happen. It was basically about this boy called Jim who kept on trying to escape horrible places that people took him to an everybody treated him horribly but there was one friend who saved Jim from getting whipped by a bad man. I would recommend it to people who like learning about history but anyone can read it!
Street Child was an amazing book written by Berlie Doherty, it is actually about a real boy called Jim Jarvis in the Victorian times who was an orphan, he had to live on a coal lighter and in a workhouse until he met a kind man called Barnie.
This book reminds me of Oliver Twist and Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. I'm glad it had a happy ending. It's an emotional read, so I'd recommend to children aged 10 and over.
I live this book. I read it a few years ago and again this week. It made me cry last time I read it so I was ready this time round. It is really well written, pulling at your heart strings all the way through.
I like how its set up
