Despite his Mum’s insistence, Sam doesn’t want to be friends with Davey, he thinks Davey’s a first class, grade A, top of the dung heap moron. But one day he saves Sam’s life and a bond is formed between them. Sam is still embarrassed to be seen with Davey, but little by little he has to admit, when it’s just the two of them, he is a lot of fun.

Cloud Busting was a hit with my Year 5 class. Suitable for ages 9 and above, this book tells a touching story about friendship and resilience that really resonated with us. The children appreciated the realistic characters and the way the author tackled difficult themes. Overall, it's a compelling read that sparked meaningful discussions in our classroom.

This is a poem so its different to what i would usually have. There were lots of different techniques of poem structures. Some were rhyming and some were haikus. I wrated it a 3 because it was very easy and i didn't understand it at first but then i got the point of it.

This is a fantastic story about friendship and how fractuous it can be as peer pressure begins to become a larger part of a child's life, all told in various poetry styles. Although the subject matter is a bit gloomy, ultimately it is a story with a positive message and you will feel optimistic when you finish the book.

I enjoyed how Malorie Blackman had a section at the back to discuss the forms she used and why. It has great applications for the classroom in exemplifying poetry- especially showing that it doesn't have to rhyme- and also has boundless applications for PSHE; friendships, individuality, allergies, bullying and loneliness are all themes throughout.

I had no gripes at all. I really enjoyed it!

An interesting story told in the form of poetry homework by Sam about his friendship with Davey and Alex. He also describes a nasty incident in the poem too which really affected the friendships.

What an interesting way to write.

I liked that the book was written like a poem - it is different from the other books that I usually read. The story in the book was ok but not as interesting or exciting as some of the other books that I have read as part of the reading challenge.

I love the format of this book, all different types of poems. I think the story will be ideal for antibullying week. Davey the new kid is a likeable character. The twist with Sam was unexpected but clever and superbly written, in fact it gave me goosebumps reading that part.

A fantastic book to share with a class of children. A super story, shared in verse, with a very important message about friendship. This book would fit well into work on friendships as well as providing inspiration for writing various styles of poetry.

Only gave it 5 stars because the option to score it higher isn't available! Love this book! So clever the way it is written. Using this within KS2 next half term to tie in with the fact that I personally love Malorie Blackman's work and it will be anti-bullying week. Going to get a key stage wall display out of this hopefully. Can't wait to share with the children and see their reactions to the events.

My favourite character is Davey, the new boy at school. I love the descriptions given to him as the story progresses and I feel these really allow you to imagine the world from his perspective and empathise with him, even when others do not. The story mainly focuses on the two central characters of Sam and Davey, other characters do feature and help add background and context to the story but the majority of the dialogue is focused on Sam’s thoughts and feelings and his relationship with Davey.
The poetry style of the book takes you by surprise at the beginning and offers a different structure to the story and really breaks the chapters down into different almost unique stories of their own. I think this alternative style of story structure just makes the book even more special. My favourite part of the book is when we get to really experience the way that Davey sees the world through the intense descriptions he offers to Sam, this progresses throughout the book and allows us to experience this alternate perception of reality along with them.
The illustrations dotted throughout the book offer another great way of breaking up the story and jolting the reading back into a different dimension of the story, coupled with the poetic layout of the text, these images are simple and yet very effective. The only thing I can possibly say I dislike about this book is the fact that I will never get to experience reading it for the first time again.
I would recommend this book for everyone in UKS2, this story would work brilliantly as a class novel, although it would be good to have the pages projected onto a white board or interactive screen to allow the class to follow along with the shape and style of the story as it is being read. This book would also be a great way to explore themes of friendship, trust, forgiveness and treating others with kindness despite our differences.

I really liked the way that it was written from Sam's point of view because it showed how much of a decision he had to make with his friends. Alex or Davey? Alex or Davey?
I would recommend this book to everyone.

I enjoyed it. I loved the book and couldn’t put it down. I loved it so much that I read it in 2 hours and I didn’t put the book down until I had finished. If I could pick a book I wouldn’t pick one with poetry in it. But this book changed my mind about poetry and now I like it. I thought the book was really good.

My friend lent me this book. I enjoyed reading it as the book was written in a different way to the books I normally read. The whole book is written is verse and is very easy to read as the words flow. The story was sad in places and shows you the importance of friendship.
