The main character, Tommo the soldier to-be, lives with his mother and his 2 brothers in a very poor French village. My favourite character is Tommo's mum who endures in a very difficult time and doesn't give up living with her kids, even when the colonel offers her a job in his farm, away from her family. She is a very strong woman, resilient and proud of her kids.
