It was very interesting! I love the magical element! My fave character is Mary. I would recommend it to people who like history!
It’s an interesting book about witches and the life of a young girl called Mary who is taken to London after her grandmother was killed.
I would definitely reccomend this book to someone els if they liked mystery and adventures!
So begins a recently discovered journal, dating back to the seventeenth century. It tells the story of Mary, a fourteen-year-old girl growing up in her grandmother’s care at the end of the English Civil War. When her grandmother is accused of being a witch, the self- appointed Witchfinder soon finds her guilty and, as the crowd bay for blood, Mary escapes. She finds sanctuary with a congregation of Puritans, bound for the New World. They are, they say, God’s chosen people: on the arduous voyage to the American frontier, they look only to their diet of fasting, prayer and Providence to keep them safe. The brand of Puritanism they discover at Salem is too gentle for them: their zealous Preachers lead them instead into the wilderness, in search of a settlement called Beulah, ‘the Bride of God’. Mary accompanies them, trying to keep her head down and her counsel to herself. But with the wild woods around her, and a society suspicious of wilful girls watching her every move, fingers are itching to point in her direction. The main theme of the story is how much people are fearful when they don’t know and most possibly will never know.
Mary moves to escape persecution and trouble finds her and people are quick to blame.
Follow Mary's diary entries as she tries to make her way in a new world.
Well written and a lovely piece of fiction which is written as if you've discovered the diary entries yourself. You become invested in Mary.
Witch Child is a fiction book about a girl who was a witch and travelled to America for hiding. I did not like this book because the plot was not interesting and the book overall was not enjoyable.
Engaging from the very beginning, interesting journey across the ocean to America in the 1600s and thought provoking with the perceptions from Native American culture towards the Western travellers. Definitely one for your reading list.
An easy read telling the story of Mary through diary entries. Set in the mid-1600s and followed by Sorceress. Engaging historical fiction suitable for KS3.
Although the beginning of this book is fascinating and bonds with the reader, i found that throughout the story, there wasn't really and meaning. It all started to become boring and i found myself forcing myself to finish the book.
