Seaton Library Reading Group
adults
We are an all female group (ranging in age from mid 40s to well over 80) who have been meeting every month for the past 6 years. We choose books together to try and reflect a variety of types of literature - and make sure that during any year we discuss poetry, biography, classical literature, something foreign, often a children\'s book, travel, detective fiction and occasionally fantasy. All our books come from Cumbria Library Services Reading Groups Section, which serves us very well. Our group is rather large (15 members) so we have closed it at the moment. Our oldest member has assured us that there could well be a vacancy shortly - but we hope not!
Several of our older members have some visual impairment and use talking books or large print books. The library (and in one case the RNIB) provides these where possible.
Our meetings start with a discussion of the book based on questions which we usually get from one of the websites, and we then generally continue with the discussion while we have refreshments. We have a summer visit to the sea as one of our members has a chalet by the nearby coast. We have a Christmas party at the library and a Christmas dinner, and are thinking of a summer meal too. Actually almost every meeting becomes a party with birthdays and anniversaries being celebrated! We also arrange theatre visits occasionally and recently a number of us went to the streaming of the London production of Coriolanus at the local cinema. Some of us support activities, such as fundraising, by baking and providing tea and coffee. We have supported World Book Group most years.
