WednesdayNight book club

adults

Meets at Clockhouse Pub on

Run by Chick Mc Kain Library service

The book club is fairly informal. We turn up drink some beers and then discuss the book and often related issues. The Finkler question didn’t warrant a huge discussion because it was a fairly weak book, but a good discussion on Jewish culture and history followed. Agent Zig zag fired off a big discussion because it was such a wonderful story, like fiction but true and Mr Chapman made a big contribution to the war effort. We meet generally on the second Wednesday of the month. We choose the book by having anyone suggest a book, describe it and then we decide. You don’t need to book just turn up, you’ll be made to feel very welcome. There are about 15 people on the mailing list but numbers tend to hover around seven or eight at most meetings, sometimes less during the holiday season. The biggest we had was thirteen but that was inflated by my son and his friends who turned up to share some birthday cake with us. We do other activities; had a visit to an exhibition of Mogul Indian art from 1500 onwards, went to an exhibition on surveillance and photography at the Tate Modern, read The Crucible and went to the play shortly after. We also went on a tour of the Jubilee line extension stations with an architect who explained, well, the architecture. That’s not as geeky as it sounds, all the stations were designed by different architects and the stations are quite spectacular. We ended up in Greenwich, had a quick pint and went for a cheap Chinese. And I generally have a book club bbq in August, it’ll probably be on 29th this year. Agent Zig zag came courtesy of world book night and we gave away 50 copies at the Clockhouse on the 5th March.

We meet at: 196A Peckham Rye, East Dulwich, Southwark, London, SE22 9QA
